It's like the old adage goes, "you can't spell oppression without 3 of the 5 letters in pants."
Gods its even more off topic now...
O MIGHTY GAMES WORKSHOP!!! HEAR OUR PLEA! GIVE US A BATTLETOME, ENDLESS SPELLS, SPELL LORES, AND MAYBE A BOX SET WITH BLADES OF KHORNE! HEAR ME IN NOTTINGHAM!

Now that is a conversion I could get behind!

Were saurus knights originally good?

What do you mean with originally? In AoS1 or in earlier editions?
I don't know about earlier ones, but in AoS they were never stellar. When properly buffed they can be OK but never really good.

Our saurus oldblood on cold one was our main heavy hitter. Even a simple, naked ScarVet was truly effective.
There were different builds and a hero on co was called "saurus cowboy".
With a proper setting you could go against a Greater daemon.

He was usually put into a saurus knights units, for double reason:
Protect your precious hero from nasty things as cannons
Increase the damage output

@NIGHTBRINGER could give more details ;)

You pretty much have it covered.

Cold One Riders were an okay unit. Neither really good nor really bad, but they could be used effectively as a Scar-vet/Oldblood delivery system.

As for the Scar-Vet and Oldblood Cowboys, they were among the very best in the entire game. There were precious few armies who could set up a more potent combat character. There were several really great builds available to Lizardmen players, and they were all very cost effective.

Well that leak that was said to be fake had Seraphon at end of March/start of April so, we could still be on the horizon!

If GW keeps up the recent pattern of releasing updates 2 armies at a time in a box set, we'll probably get an update with chaos, the most likely option seeming to be tzeench, as he hasn't gotten any attention in a while.
