8th Ed. My first attempt at a Lizard list for years!

Hey guys

I'm a new / old player to lizards, been tempted away from those foul chaos gods to serve the old ones once again! I've had a read through the site and had my own thoughts and come up with this fir 2000 pts! A little annoyed I've not got more dinosaurs in it though!!

so going to stick the basti in the middle with the Solar Engine, run the mage priest in the temple guard and gor rok in the saurus giving me to good solid blocks that shouldn't run away, sallies on one flank, skinks on the other and the priests running interference. as I said, somewhat disappointed that I couldn't get more dino's in!
what do you guys think? Any advice on what I can improve / change or what I should drop for a steggy!

Consider the following changes if you are so inclined...

make both priests lvl1
drop the sword of might from champ
drop gleaming pennant
put flaming banner on TG standard bearer
give slann standard of discipline for ld10 cold blooded IP and your TG is nigh unbreakable anyway stubborn ld 10 cold-blooded.
Or if you prefer more punch on the TG give razor banner to Slann.
Is your TG a bunker only or fighting unit? if fighty 20 may be a bit light...If bunker consider soul of stone on slann as TG are expensive.

After tweaking like that you may have some leftover points (if you do not go for razor banner)
depending on the amount points you have maybe more TG or skink skirmishers or terradons.

Personally I feel so limited at 2000 points I rather prefer 2500
The extra 500 goes a long way to add some dinosaurs

It seems 2000 is average game size in our store... I'm sure if I did rock up with 2500 though people would play, maybe I'll try and be a new trend setter!

Good list imo, I would swap for-rok for a scar vet, but thats just preference, this army will work out great I think

I like gorrok for the fact then I can have 2 big blocks of ld 10 stubborn infantry and he has some nice extras!

I have to ask why it is that you're relying on magic this heavily? Especially at 2000pts.

You have 105pts of "extra" on your slann alone, then comes the 180pts you've put in your priests. That's a total of 585pts (not counting the BSB) JUST TO MAKE MAGIC. I don't want to come off as rude, I swear, but do you really need THAT much?

IMO, and this is just my opinion. Drop the Ld banner - I know it's cheap, but do follow, they're stubborn and can reroll should they fail. Not gonna happen - and drop the priest w/ cube. The cube is the most expensive of the two dispel items and it's not even as reliable. You're going to hate yourself when you roll a 1 and Dwellers bellow is popped on your guards. Eventually it will happen, just like stupidity will fail.

Right, so no Ld banner and no second priest w/ cube is 110 pts. My personal preference is to go cheap on the slann, but I'm also playing at 2500 and that allows me to have a fully kitted Oldblood along to play with.

Anyway.. Then we have Gor-Rok. Is he awesome? Yes! Can you do the same for less? Sure - Scar vet, dragonhelm, light armour, shield/sword and crown of command will cost you 135pts - a 50pts difference. Your scar vet is now, along with the unit he's in, stubborn.

I've now saved you 160pts and you're still pretty much just as good going as before. If you already got the Gor Rok model I don't think anybody would mind you taking him along as a replacement for the regular scar vet model.

Now here's the question: What's the Bastiladon for? To protect your flank or MORE magic? I know it's an awesome model, but if it's for the magic here's what you can do: you have 160 in the bank, exchange your bast for an ancient stegadon. Without sharpened horns you'll still have 80pts left. Now, if you want to you can ditch ONE templeguard and get 8 cameleon skinks for warmachine hunting for the rest of the points.

If you want the bast, and that's fine you can fit in another one, or some kroxigors, or some cameleon skinks or something. There's a lot of options left. More templeguards or saurus warriors? You can easily fit in 6 guards and 5 warriors for extra lulz and I bet you your army is most likely stronger compared to an extra level 1 priest, a scroll and a special character.

This is obviously all just my opinion. I don't want to rely on magic. When you roll low in winds of magic and doesn't channel any dice what do you expect your almost 600pts worth of mages to do?

If you really want to use Gor-rok you can do so, but it's an easy way to save some points and the biggest difference is that he'll be T6 (in terms of defence), the AS3+ can easily be acquired on a scar vet on food.

Otherwise your list looks good and if you want you can still go ahead with your current list, but I do think some fine tuning can be done.

Hey, thanks for the reply, I suppose when you break it down like that I've put a lot of magic in! but Lizards magic is pretty strong, and I'll a choice of 10 spells that I could in theory cast if the dice god smile! Then on the other hand the dice gods stopped smiling on me a while ago, so yes I suppose it would be better to stack things in my favor more with something that isn't so reliant on luck.

I'm thinking of maybe upping it to a 2500, if I let people know before hand then that should be fine and I'll still get a game. I could then actually have an ancient steg and with the suggestions some nice flyers as well to scour the flanks, or even two stegs!

There are plenty of options and we're all of different opinions. Some don't mind spending a lot of points in magic others do. In my next game I'll be going with a slann w/ wandering deliberation (8 sig spells) and Book of Ashur, with BSB he comes at 425 pts. Then I'll be adding a skink priest (heaven) with scroll just so I can continue to shoot magic missiles even when my slanns guard unit is engaged. 500pts just to do magic is a lot IMO. Normally I'd rather take a "naked" slann for 300pts since I'm fine with the regular lores. If I really want to save points I can then have him have the dispel scroll and then no priest.

And I realize that our "thing" is to do magic, but what exactly is it you want to do? If it's to cast uber spells with irresistble force then that's something all the others can do as well. This is also why I'm trying out the above mentioned combo, since it won't let me have any actual uber spells, but let me throw smaller spells left and right, draining my opponents DD pool. Some of the spells are bound to get through. This IMO is something that most others can't do. 8 Spells each with their own lore and all can be casted with 2 dice? Sounds interesting to me.

High magic is great though since it allows for some flexible spell swapping, it just requires experience to use IMO.

Anyway 2500pts is where the fun starts. It allows you to be much more flexible and you can start having some really powerful builds. When I played at 2000pts I always felt so restrained and that I just needed a little more. With 2500pts I'm fine, I can get most of what I want.

I think that 30% of your points spent on creating magic is overkill, in any list for any army. Magic is only one phase, and in an average phase you can't really plan to get more than one spell off. It's great if you get more than that, but in planning terms you ought not too (imho). There are definitely other armies out there that can match Lizardmen for ability to dispel (I'm thinking about the Beastmen list I played against recently - low level wizards near the Herdstone generated a LOT of dispel dice) and a list like that will nullify all those points.

At 2,000 points especially, you don't really have any points to spare. How did you approach building your list?
