7th Ed. Magic or just defence?

Is it viable in an army over 2000 points to limit yourself to just dispelling magic and what the priest/eotg offers?

I guess it boils down to Oldblood on Carno or Slann with TG?

I know they are very different unit types.. but I'm thinking around 2000pts, is it reasonable to only take an eotg?

Just looking for perspective on both options I guess as I continue to build Pros and Cons.. that sorta thing

At 2000 points a Priest on an engine with a couple of dispel scrolls can be a very effective anti-magic setup. You could also look at adding a level one priest on foot with say the cloak of feathers (to make him fly and give him the ability to get away from the enemy) if you felt it was underpowered for not too many more points.

Magic is really a strong point for Lizardmen but we can field a pretty effective melee army as well. Old-Blood on Carnosaur, some Cold One Cavalry, Saurus blocks with Scar Vets thrown in and some Stegadons for all-around smashy monster goodness is a nice change up if your local meta-game plays lizards as heavy magic.

Personally I always take a Slann, 100% of the time. The Slann is just too good to pass up imo. LD9 is a huge difference from the oldbloods 8, and with mystery + rumination the Slann is one of the most potent spell casters in the game, as well as being the by far most resilient caster in the game.

However in the LM case the Slann is more resilient and has better LD. The Oldblood is also far too similar to Scar Vets. The difference is 1 WS, 1 W, 1 A (and 1 In, but that barely counts), for 60 pts and a Lord Choice. Everything that the Oldblood can do can be done with a scar-vet except running around on a Carno, which is only really effective against large targets anyway.

Dont think you need to take TGs just because you take a Slann, a lot of the top LM players on both the UK and the swedish tournament scene play with lone Slanns. Personally I'd never field TGs as I dont like units worth 1000 VPs.

That being said, the Oldblood (or even scar-vets only) is still a viable choice. If a priest on engine with the diadem and a scroll is enougth for magic defence depends completly on your local warhammer scene. Are poeple bringing 17 PD tzeench lists? Are most people playing scroll caddys? Most of the time I'd say a diadem on a Eotg is fine, where I play you could probably get away with 3 DDs and 2 scrolls.

Since you have experience with a Slann... what do you find to be the effective Lores against opponents in your local gaming scene?
