Oh come on it is a VERY cheesy story and a horribly bad depiction of military, and especially military flying.
As a fan of military flight simulations and aviation, and military planes in general (my main hobby for many years) I purely watch it for the planes, those exterior scenes were shot very professionally.
But if you count the errors in the rest of the movie and drink shots for each you will be horribly drunk after the first few scenes. At one point Maverick even uses the throttle in the wrong direction, it is dire.

Popcorn movies aren't designed to depict realism, especially when it comes to the military. Who wants to watch a movie about a bunch of childults sitting around, doing their enforced gym sessions, and then sitting around some more.

Top Gun is definitely not realistic; my point is simply that it is typically not referred to as a "bad movie". As far as the cheesy story goes, some of that is due to the age of the movie. It was made for its time.

Pittsburgh of all things!
That has to be because of the Steelers - Cowboys rivalry! :D

That being said: "hate" doesn't accurately describe what I feel for pirates.... I just kinda dislike them.
