I used the regular steg with the giant bow this weekend against the new Beasts of Chaos list. This is the 1st time I fielded this unit, but I found it excel at one thing in particular for me, and that was taking down large high toughness/no armor targets.
The unintended combination of the steg plus the hit/wound rerolls granted by my Skink priest with Second Sign of Amul allowed that one unit to take out a Ghorgon, a Jabberslythe, and some Minotaurs before ever seeing combat.
I had never never seen the value of a BS3 bolt thrower but with the poison rule, +1 one to hit large targets, and the rerolls afforded by the spell, I have found it to be AMAZING against GW's new trend of giant terrorizing monsters.
-Just my 2 cents-
