8th Ed. Krox Unit Concept

Hey

Am thinking of a build for a Krox unit as I never use the ones I have. Let me know what you think or if you've ever tried anything similar and how it worked?

Slann BSB Lore of Life, Crown of Command, Dragonbane Gem, Mystery, Rumination and Higher State.
7 Krox

The thinking is 21 S6 Ws3 Attacks + Stomps from a fear causing T8 4+ Regen LD9 Stubborn Cold Blooded unit. Its within 20 points of the temple Guard unit that I normally use to run with the Slann but hits harder and is slightly better protected. (4+A instead of 5+ in CC)

What do you think?

Forgot to mention it also has the advantage over the temple guard unit that the Slann can add wounds back on the unit through Lore of Life attribute as well as using Regrowth on them.

This sounds really interesting, might try it out in the future! Some disadvantages I can see though is losing Immune to Psychology and Stubborn, and the Slann is open to attacks from the rear. But still, the Life Lore attribute is huge bonus imo.

EDIT2: Oh, and the Armour Save is the same. Krox have Scaly Skin 4+ and TG 5+, but TG have Light Armor.

The big disadvantage is that krox are on 40mm bases, Slann on 50mm base. That means the Slann will just sit to the side of the krox unit, and he is thus very exposed to attacks both from the front and especially from the flank since he would be the only one in contact. That alone is probably a deal breaker for me to ever consider it.

5 Wounds @ T8 with Etherial and 4+ Ward (4+ Regen if they negate the ward somehow) regaining wounds from lore attribute and regrowth. The Slann is going to to really hard to get rid off and all the attacks your opponent directs at him means less hitting the Krox who get to hit back at full strength. He also has Dragonbane Gem as I find opponents targeting my temple guard always seem to have flaming attacks as they are expecting the regen. You could also give him 2+ Ward v Ranged as an alternative. I think we over protect the Slann when especially with Lore of Life we don't necessarily need to.

Also consider most Lizard armies contain at least one Skink priest so you can guarantee having Iceshard blizzard which makes fear more likely to be useful, and gives -1 to hit for opposition further insulating the Slann (and unit from harm)

I realise to be effective this does require the magic buffs but even if you don't get Throne of Vines up I think your opponent is going to hard pressed to stop all of them.

I'm also thinking about the Flank attack problem you mention. If your opponent sets up a flank charge, your very likely to know that its coming and so simply move the Slann across to the other side of the unit in your turn. Even if your in combat couldn't you just 'make way' with the Slann or issue a challenge to the unit in your front to ensure he couldn't target the slann?

If your opponent manages to charge you on both flanks at the same time to prevent this then they probably deserve to kill the Slann and beat you

bottom line is that kroxigors are very overpriced atm, and putting a 400 point slann with them wont help that. there is no real synergy between slann and kroxigors, since you shouldnt need stubborn since you shouldnt lose combat. tbh, this is a case of "1+1=2" rather than the "1+1=3" that you want in a good combo.

Allvery good points, you have obviously given this a lot of thought. To me, psychologically, it still feels like a fragile unit. It is a huge amount of points so anything long range will try to hit it hard, and losing a couple krox is a fair few points. I don't generally find monstrous infantry units terribly difficult to bring down, though they certainly can be if they are supported and especially with the life buffs on them.

But honestly, aside from what Lord Tsunami said, it sounds like an interesting idea. I think you should try it in a couple of battles and post your results in here.

You're also slowing down the Krox to Move 4, which would remove any chance of their speed helping to maneuver them. Maybe just get a scar vet with Helm on a cold one to run with them? Then park the Slann right behind them in another unit?

I like this idea more. It also reminds me of the squig herders, but with giant death dealing kroxigor (and the slann is the goblin).

The problem with separating the Slann from the unit is that you then can't give regen to the unit as it works on the Slanns own unit.

Re movement, I haven't assigned a Banner to the BSB slann, you could make him movement 5 which would improve matters but in comparison temple guard are only movement 4 so movement 4 krox unit isn't really giving anything up if your using it as I'm suggesting as a replacement.
