Of course, when the GM accidentally throws a $108M octopus* at the party, it really just becomes a game of "why bother adventuring when I can commission magic items or hire adventurers to get those items for me?".
*this happened in the first GURPS campaign I took part in. It was supposed to be just a fantasy pirate campaign, but it very quickly spiraled out of control with a city of merfolk getting depth-charged on market day (over the course of liberating it for some lizardfolk whom the nearby mayor wanted removed from the swamp), us making off with the kidnapped slave harem of a sheik, and finally having a random encounter with a giant octopus over a chest of dwarven coins that turned out to be worth $108 million in antiquity pricing. We quickly went from pirates to East India Trading Company after that.
