After reading the Silmarillion twice years ago, I forgot most of the details but I remember how long and flowery the descriptions of Luthien's beauty was. If he didn't say Luthien was based on his wife, he would sleep on the couch forever and ever. Assuming his wife read his work at least. I've heard of famous authors whose spouse doesn't really pay much attention to what they write.
