When it's flying through space, it's called a meteor. When it hits the ground on Earth, it's called a meteorite.
Though I learned it in school, it was reinforced by the Dinosaur TV show when insurance agent explained why their "Meteor Insurance" didn't cover anything when a meteorite destroyed their TV.
