Indian Maharajahs would sometimes give an elephant as a gift to a lord they didn't like. The lord didn't dare dispose of it or mistreat it as it was a gift from the Maharajah, except the upkeep of an elephant was very expensive. This ensured the lord struggled financially and kept him from plotting against the Maharajah
