They rushed it, pure and simple. 6 episodes was simply not enough to cover that much ground. They needed 2 full seasons to do it justice.

For clarity's sake, I was referring to the expectations of fans who want the show to be re-written pronto when the cast and crew would have had too little time to make such changes on the fly. In many ways, much like how it was with Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica, it's almost as if some fans, passionate as they can be, insist that they know the series better than the creators.
