Funny, the answer there is a _tad_ wrong.
A wood fire can easily cause a lot more heat if the heat is not dissipated. Under ideal circumstances.... 1000°C could be doable.
...and especially if the charcoal created by parts of the wood fire also starts burning, things can go very hot.
During the iron age people melted iron with charcoal fires, which needs about 1600°C.
...he's still right. Damage of the cross was possible, but in the position where it was hanging the cross was never in danger of melting from the heat of the fire on the roof.
