Someone once explained it to me this way. Let's say you have two people, person A and person B. Person A asks out 100 of the prettiest girls he knows. Let's say that 99 reject him, but 1 says yes. Person B, plays it safe and doesn't ask out anybody.

Who is better off? Person A failed 99% of the time (a horrible rate of failure) while person B did not fail a single time, but in the end who is the victor? Who would you rather be?
