Not so far fetched...
I read a sci-fi story where there was a finite quota of souls allotted to human kind and they had all been used up. So people were born soul-less and dead inside unless they were born at the exact moment someone else had died and freed up a soul.

I have a similar theory about common sense. There is a finite amount of it, and the more people you have in the world, the less of it each person gets...

Yep, this checks out. Looks like my game room. Piles upon piles of board games, some of which I have never opened (my father-in-law collected them and gave us a HUGE pile when he switched to baseball card collecting).
