i have had some success with running a lone slann but its had its hariy moments. Probably my bad tactics im still pretty new to the game but i have had a couple of issues where a unit i expect to win loses combat and then are ran down and destroyed. My opponents get to use this to redirect there unit into my slann and its game over. I tried keeping him right near my table edge and away from the fight but that just allows your opponent to run round your flank with something and isolate the slann.

One option i havent tried but am looking forward to is putting my slann in small unit of skinks maybe 20, only costs 100 points and gives him a banner, and a few ranks for combat result. keep the skink unit/slann at the back of your main force and at least if he explodes he takes a few skinks and not TG. Im hopeful this might just act as a deterant and people wont want to charge any fast cav around the flank to have a go at the unit. Even considered putting a kroxigor or 2 in the unit just because it would look amazing, would have to be set up as below but i think it would be an awesome sight and something ive never seen done. (would have to check its actually a legal unit too but im sure it is)

Since he has a different footprint he'd have to go off to the side. Honestly, you're better off just running him in TG.

I've had a little success with a solo Slann by leaving a small unit of skinks (10 with or without 1 Krox) near him to act as a bodyguard. The skinks won't beat anything, but they can line up to redirect the enemy's charge which should give the Slann a chance to escape. It also helps to give the Slann the Banner of Swiftness - its cheap and the extra movement helps him not get cornered.

BUT I'll caution that my main opponent is Skaven so I'm not too worried about my main combat troops breaking unexpectedly. The biggest danger my Slann has faced is Gutter Runners (or is it Night Runners?) popping up from my board edge, and the skinks can handle them.

I find with Higher State of Conciousness and the BSB, my lone Slann is fine. I have lost him in a couple games I have played (actually the majority of them now), but he is very cheap, so I have been able to pull out a win still. In my opinion, when running a solo Slann, it is better to run him cheap. Higher State of Conciousness means that even when he gets charge, he is only going to be losing my three and should be fine, unless the opponents has some magical attacks.

What vapor meant by putting having to put him on the side of the unit was litterally, attaching him to the side, and not inside the unit at all. He has a different footprint to 20mm and 40mm models. So you attach him to the outside of the unit, at the front corner. He never goes inside and won't count towards ranks.
