Go with the first list. drop the temple guard and add more saurus. In a 1000 pt game, the TG are too expensive. You should also add a salamander if possible. Some chameleons couldn't hurt either.

No point in TG for this size. I always try to run a salamander. They are awesome. If you are fighting an army that has a lot of multi-wound models (like ogres), razordons work nicely (but that's the ONLY time I'd field them). More saurus warriors are always good. Chameleons are GREAT!

To me, saurus, skink skirmishers, salamanders, and chameleons form the core of most of my armies, regardless of points.
