I would recommend the battalion and a skink priest as then you get the most important things:
magic
big block
elite units
shooting
and fast moving and hard hitting cavalry.
further things to consider is a salamander or something similar to add something big and nasty.
you can use one of the saurus thingies in the battalion as a leader if you want.

The battalion is agreat start, however the CoC are now at reduced effect (thanks to new charge and inititive rules). I personally bought 2 Batalions (hypocrisy I know!) and swaped the CoC sprues for some of my mates Grave Guard spures (as I am a VC player at heart). As well as a slann and a skink priest with some more saurus in the post.
It really depends on how quickly you want to expand your army. I go straight to 2000pts but also depends on how much you want to spend. See if your local hobby shop has some lizards you can use to experiment with before you commit to buying. This is what I did and built my army before buying. Gives you some direction!
Any further questions you have just ask, any of the players will happily give advice and ideas as it looks like you are going for the gaming aspects.

Haha yes indeed I'm going more for the gaming aspects. I've been in the wargaming hobby for 15 years, and throughout the time I've gathered enough wisdom to realize one thing: I don't have the time nor the motivation to do a masterpiece-level GW game army, simply because there are far too many figures in an army. I save my better paintjobs for games with smaller armies, like Warmachine

To be honest I grew up with a great love for dinosaurs, so personally the natural thing I'm inclined to do is get a Carnosaur (or two) and a Stegodon (or two) then buy a whole bunch of Saurus warriors, mainly because the Skinks look a little weedy for my dinosaur-loving self. I was told Skinks are awesome though.
I'd very much appreciate if you guys had threads/links which break down the usefulness of each option in the book under the 8th ed rule set. Not sure if there is one out there (I'm assuming bits and pieces) but honestly any bit of advice would be great. I usually try to only buy what I'll use for the most part unless a model is absolutely stunning due to financial restrictions and the fact that I won't have time to build/paint too many models anyway haha

Joasht. I do not paint at high levels! I just know that a fully painted army on the field of battel ALWAYS has the dice gods favour if painting an unpainted army. I just batch paint my models. For example the Lizards I have started now are only 24 hours old really! Batch painting! But hey I only started because I love converting!

There is a reason why GW tournaments generally only require three colors on a model. Unless painting and modeling are your thing most of us prefer to play more than to paint!
I've run an all Saurus army twice and even though I won both times it was a lot closer than what I normally win by. A large part of this was due to the fact that I didn't have any skinks. These little guys' shooting is absolutely phenominal! I would recommend trying at least one unit of 10 - 12 and see where that lends you.

You should definitely field some skinks (at least give them a try). IMO a good Lizerdmen army can't go without em.
I saw a match recently and the guy also didn't like skinks and just fielded a lot of saurus. His bad luck was that he was playing against dwarfs and some warmachines. it was more like a shooting gallery, the saurus are just too slow.

Hey man,
I'm a fairly new Lizardmen player myself. The battalion box was a great start for me. I've bought another box of Skinks, and Saurus to give me a well rounded 2000-pt force.
The Steg, Slann, and sallies are all solid. I did do my own conversions for Sallies, though, I find the GW models to be a touch fugly.
The only thing I'll warn you of is the sheer amount of Flak I've caught at my local gamestore for Lizardmen.
Slann are incredibly hard for people to deal with with their item/discipline combos. Salamanders are the same way, people have no real way to compete with the super-templates they lash out.
Just... keep it in mind. Fielding 3 Sallies, a Slann, and a Steg will probably earn you quite abit of ire. For friendly games, that is.

Haha I'm not too worried about that, I'm thinking of using them more as a tournament army, and leave the casual gaming to my other armies.
I was told Cold One Cavalry are just downright terrible now though, I'm aware some people said they weren't "that good" earlier in this thread, but being told they are unplayable is a different story altogether. Although the battalion is still worth the money simply because you get them for almost nothing if you do the math, its a pity that I'll end up with a bunch of guys that may never see play....
