Blog Imrahil's Paint and WIP log

As a parent, other parents will agree, you have moments in life that you'll be thinking: "he/she is growing up so fast, it seemed like yesterday that they were born."

Well today was such a day. Our oldest(son, 8 years) watched me hobby-ing over my shoulder and said: "I also want to paint a model. I want to do the same hobby when I am older" :shamefullyembarrased::shamefullyembarrased::shamefullyembarrased: I shared this with my wife and to my surprise she liked it that he wants to paint a model.
During this summer holiday I will go and learn him to paint his model. :artist::artist:

Now for the approach, I have quite some models lying around that still need some paint, but what should I pick. My son specifically said it has to be an awesome model and that gold is his favorite color. To me these criteria are met in the Stormcast Eternals, but I am not sure if I want my kid to go down that road. Warhammer and particularly AoS are not directly suitable for 8 year-olds. And also I do not have the desire to go on with AoS 3.0.

I feel MESBG is a little bit more suitable for his age and I like the models and gameplay very much. I have a lonely Rohan warrior lying around, that can function as a nice start of an army. If I can get my son excited enough for the hobby I might be able to talk my wife into us(my son and I) sharing the starters kit of the Pellenor Fields :angelic: :angelic:

That's awesome to hear! When I think of gold armor for middle earth I think of Rivendell elves!

Lately I tend to diviate more and more in the MESBG side of the hobby. As I was going through the armybook, specifically the Minas Tirith sectio my eye fell on the Guards of the Fountain Court.

The rulebook states as follows:

The Wargear a Guard comes with is Heavy armour, dagger and a spear.

Optional it can be given a shield or a banner.

I like the models quite a bit and don't mind that they are resin cast, but the optional shield is not supplied with the models, neither does the banner.
There are alternative sculpts for purchase.

Luckely I had some Numenorians lying around to borrow a shield from. With a magnet and a piece of metal I made it really optional.

I painted up the shield in a different way then the Warriors of Minas Tirith currently have their shields. This was a nice tester to see if I could do better. It was supposed to look like the shieldbis made up out of multiple planks of wood:

I like the result, but it could be sharper. I will try this on the warriors as well, when I'll get to repainting them.

And here is the end result of a Guard of the Fountain Court with shield:

I still need to think of a way to get a removable banner on the spear:pompus:

Well, for me you achieved your target with the shield. I can see that it is supposed to be multiple pieces of wood.

Good job dude! Really nice effect,

Hey man, great idea with those shields. I remember having the same issue back when I did my own guards of the fountain court… that magnet thing is mint. Keep going!

Thank you all!
Glad to see the 'new' shield paintjob shows as intended ;)

In the last couple of days I had to remind my son almosy every day that, although he has summer vacation, I still have to work.

Him painting his first model is planned for upcoming saterday :) :)

I lined up the following models, for him to choose from:

This is a man of Numenor with shield, just to clear that up (I thought it wasn't that good to see from the picture)
