It would be interesting to see how they match up to other core infantry units. I suspect that they would do fairly well. Not game breakers, but decent.

Absolutely, as Core units in Warhammer Fantasy Saurus are pretty decent - Strength and Toughness 4 and 2 attacks takes them a long way, along with above-average Leadership. Their Weapon Skill is average and their Initiative is terrible, but they have a solid armour save so can take a lot of flak before they get to fight back. Plus in TOW where they receive +D3 Initiative on the charge, on occasion they have a chance to hit something first...

As you all probably know I prefer Saurus over Skinks in terms of rule of cool, and field at least one unit (if not both my units) in my Lizardmen army as a solid core, and I've seen them grind through units of weaker enemy Core troops at least double their number. Goblins, Clanrats, Ungors, human infantry and even Elven spearmen are all no match for them because though they get to strike first, having to wound on 5s is a killer, not to mention the decent armour save Saurus have to minimise casualties, with generally no armour save penalties from their weak opposition. Then the Saurus can chew through them with their greater attacks per model and wounding on 3s, very often inflicting a -1 armour save penalty to the already weak armour these units have.

Then you have other Core units that are around equal to them - Dwarfs, Gors, Bretonnian Knights and the like - these units are all around the same in terms of rough durability and/or damage output and can hold the Saurus to a stalemate. Dwarfs only have one attack but have higher WS and Initiative, and either have superior armour but a weaker Strength, or trade that for slightly inferior armour and better Strength and armour-piercing capabilities with a Great Weapon (albeit Striking Last, allowing the Saurus to get in first). Gors have a complete lack of armour, but have significantly superior Initiative, higher Weapon Skill, the same number of attacks if they go with Additional Hand Weapons (which they will... as a Beasty fan I know all too well that there's no point in giving them shields) and have the potential to re-roll failed hit rolls with Primal Fury, which will help to somewhat mitigate then having to wound the Saurus on 5s. If they can get a good number of hits and wounds in and the Saurus fluff their armour saves they could kill a good few before the Saurus get chance to fight back. Then you have the Knights - inferior Strength and Toughness means they won't be wounding the Saurus all that often (except if they get to charge with lances) and the Saurus will find it easy to wound them, but they have by far the best armour save for a Core unit which even Saurus will find it hard to get through... even if they fluff their charge attacks you can be sure that they'd at least hold a Saurus unit in place and keep the combat a grinding stalemate, with the Knights not being able to do much about the greater numbers and Toughness of the Saurus, and the Saurus not being able to do much about the Knights' superlative armour. Going back to Skaven, I wonder if Stormvermin would have any capability against Saurus with their Strength 4 halberds... but they'd still be Toughness 3 and would have an armour save reduced to 6s so they'd really have to focus on attacking to remove Saurus models before they can tear them apart.

And of course there are units that are out-and-out better... Ogres and Chaos Warriors (at least in 8th... TOW Chaos Warriors are more balanced and might be a more even opposition) will sadly walk all over them - both units would strike first and churn out lots of Strength 4 attacks (including Stomps from Ogres) that will cause a good few wounds and reduce the Saurus' armour enough to grind them down, pretty much beating the Saurus at their own game. But those units cost a lot more points per model.

I would certainly agree Saurus are middle-tier Core units - not world-beating, but not crap either as the meme might attest.
