well I came across an interesting scenario teh other day, a unit of slaves was rushed right infront of my cold ones, and if I charged I would have landed (due to the flee reaction i knew would come) right infrotn of a clanrat unit (with warlock, chieftan and ratling on the side....)

so my question is, could I have used the totem even though the slaves were clearly within range to better my chances at hitting the unit behind?

No reason why not, as the LM book says.
One use only. The unit can add D6" to its charge move. If the move fails, the unit moves forward at its normal movement rate.

Yeah I think that would be a good use for it, skaven like to throw the slaves first so they get the charge on you after with the rest of their army, good way to block the tactic.
