The background team need your opinion on our army name. You're allowed to vote up to 3 times. If you don't like the proposals please, if you can, mention what you'd like.
I've asked about previously suggested army names and this was the respons:

"Firstborn" was unfortunately disqualified for not being recognisable enough as describing an army of lizards. The "Saurian" suggestions were given some discussion but we feel will probably end up with too much confusion with unit names (i.e. the army is not only Saurus/Saurians). If there's a lot of community support for Saurian Hosts/Cohorts/etc we'd be interested to hear it.

These names are supposed to be illustrative of a certain form to the name, rather than just meaning that name with no variation. E.g. we will interpret a vote for "Reptilian Hosts" as a vote for names that modify but don't abandon the term "Reptilian". Ditto for Cold-blooded and Saurian.

I play Tyranids in 40k, so any choice like that is way out for me. I like the Reptialian Host as it speaks of what we are, a lot of reptiles. My additional suggestion is Spawns of the Old Ones, or perhaps Cold Host of the Old Ones.
 
If "First Born" is not cold blooded enough I recommend "First Spawned".

Another option is to play up the Aztec aspect by merging two words together. For example, "Mesoamerican" and "dinosaurs" to "Mesosaurians." or "Mesosaurs."

Basically any ethnic word from the Wikipedia entries for Aztecs, Mayans, and/or Incans, and splice it with a well known word for dinosaur or lizard.

If you do use a literal name such as the Cold Blooded host, I recommend you use that term for what outsiders call the Lizardmen come up with an Aztec-sounding for a self referential name.
 
Making the name both fit the description of lizards and making it somewhat different and unique, is a tough one.
I generally like the idea about making the lizards feel old, in their name as well. Ancients something, host of the old age etc. ... but the notion of attempting to generate some mesoamerican associations is intriguing :) can we do that?

The firsborn arankhas (arankha is incan for a type of lizard)

Tha K'an reptilians (K'an is sort of a sign in the Mayan calendar whose name is a sinonym for "sky", "snake", "seed", people born in it have the character traits of lizards, plus it sounds kind of majestic)

These suggestions are very interesting. I could defiantly see something like this being the term for our army, perhaps something that leis really close to these terms at least. I myself, am not a school in any particular mesoamerican words, I only know the Nahythul(Aztec, probably misspelled) words that we all use in english, like chilie and advocado ;) ohh and Maiz! I reckon these wouldn't be very inspiring to use, though.

I really like "The K'an reptilians". It souds exotic, it shows we are reptilians, and some may notice what k'an means. K'an host would also be good, if it was explained clearly that k'an means snake or reptilian in our language (cause it should :) )

I don't have a problem with the name K'an, it is short and fairly easy to pronounce (I think), but I would prefer it be spelled "Kahawn" or something similar. Adding apostrophes to names has become a horrible cliché in fantasy writing.

I cannot overemphasize this. I see gratuitous apostrophes in names I immediately dock a letter grade in my head when evaluating the work of a fantasy author. Apostrophes are a lazy way to make something look exotic without effort. The only exception to the rule is if you are deliberately going for a campy name for humorous purposes.
 
Huh, never thought about this but you are right. I will never look the same at all those names and titles. One of my female rats is named Apostrophe, and now it feels so wrong.
 
That's a very good point, Scalenex. I reckon that here it's a little bit more fair, since we are dealing with a general word, actually existing. For a fantasy name, spell it out.
Apostrophes is something I rarely encounters myself, in my own writing or in others, but I can see how it's becoming tiresome in generic fantasy.
DnD setting was especially over populated by them, at one point. They might still be :p
 
The old GW fluff is full of cheesy references....now im not saying that we should name thing riperdactyls :rolleyes: but we probably shouldnt name things Ankylosaurus, because it will be hard to pronounce or remember especialy buy other army players or new guys that arent so much in the fluff (and real life dyno loving)...it would only get a nickname anyway...

my first suggestions the Firestborn Arankhas is without apostrophes yet peopple clinged more to the K'an version because its more cathcy, which is expected...
 
"Coldblood Host" is my favorite out of those listed, but I think shortening it to "Coldbloods" would be better. It's short and to the point, adding things like "host" is simply lengthening the name for the sake of it.
 
Firstborn, first spawned or coldbloods for me. Really don't like Reptilians.
 
I prefer The First Born and The Saurian Host

I think with "Saurian Host", it is important to note that we could call the army book "The Saurian Host" without using "saurian" on every unit name.

I disagree. I actually think Reptilians is worse than Lizardmen (and that's saying something), but I seem to be outvoted on this and Reptilians is the working name the 9th Age team is using as of now. Reptilians seems just as tacky, but it lacks the literal punch of Lizardmen. It's like saying Disneyworld is ruled by the Mouseians. Lazy writing. Also, they aren't literally reptiles. They are closer to amphibians.

Most importantly, the Lizardmen would take their lizardness for granted. Only outsiders would call them Lizardmen, just like the Skaven probably don't call themselves Ratmen.
 
Agreed :)

But I am under the impression, that the 9th guys are going for the name outsiders would call them.
