8th Ed. GW Studio Lizardmen army on round bases

Ranking those things is a horribly frustrating process. I'm still trying to find a clever system of ranking them up. Maybe creating different levels?
20x40mm bases.

Stop trying to fit one skink per base.

Put some skinks on 20x40s. Put a pair of skinks on a 40x40. The 40x40 counts as four skinks, the 20x40 counts as two.

You still have some on individual 20x20 bases (the front rank) and some others on square 20s mixed in with the 20x40s and the 40x40s. Net effect: bigger units using fewer figures, more room between bases.

That might be the most practical option, as long as you ensure that you have enough singles to effectively remove casualties. Reminiscent of unit fillers.

And it allow for some creativity =]

I saw some pictures on whineseer. Half the models were on square bases. Why are we going all kinds of nerd rage on this? Also I'm about to order s fvckton of temple bases so expect me to be in denial until the very end :3

The thing is, why would GW re-base the lizardmen models if rounds weren't making some sort of appearance? Unless there is a separate skirmish game, we'll be seeing rounds to one degree or another in 9th. We don't have the full picture yet so there is still a bit of hope... but it's a tiny sliver of hope at best.

I know, but if you check whineseer they are assuming everything is about to be on round bases. There can be plenty of explanations to this and people obviously decided to go with the cup half empty.

So, the disciplined temple guard are in loose skirmish formation, and the skinks are neatly lined up in square ranks?! Kind of the opposite to what I'd expect, and seeing such an odd combination, I have to admit I'm seriously doubting that this is a reflection of impending changes to game play, rather than the aesthetics of the army while on display.

Don't know that reference...

By explaining it I would be invoking it. Look it up and you'll see how it could relate to having negative views about two different types of bases mingling with each other.

I've looked a lot at those images and I still thing square and round bases together just looks messy and displeasing to the eye.

I have seen some specialist hobby notes that make resin bases etc start unveiling movement trays that can accommodate round bases ranked up next to each other. Most of them are daemon themed since daemons already had the round/square issue.

I'm hoping there'll be a skirmish game with round bases and regular Warhammer with square. Logical? Maybe not, but annihilating the rest of your current fan base wouldn't be considered logical either.

Circular bases help no one! But those are some of the 9th edition rumours. I would be appalled to see circular become the norm for 9th edition.

Just saw a post on the warhammer fantasy page on FB which has a blightking and a skaven character new in the blister with both a square and a round base in the package

Packaged with both. Shipping with extra parts. I predicted that in the other thread.

I personally dont mind the fact that both are in there. I probably wont play the skirmish version (or perhaps with square bases vs buddies). I'm glad that the chances of me being forced to rebase all of my stuff might be optional.

What if they had a rule that a single army needed to be based entirely on squares OR entirely on rounds?

What if they have corrected the (what is in my opinion an enormous) flaw embodied in the question:

"How do these rank up after a charge?"

There are a lot of odd problems that result with the highly formalized ways that units MUST (absolutely must) rank up after charges and for close combat.

Maybe they fixed that by making it so much less important that a unit on rounds can fight a unit on squares?

Many of their recent plastic kits have lots of optional pieces. (Such as the the razordon/terradon kit....lots of extra pieces after you choose which to build.) Given a willingness to create kits like that it would not be a great surprise if they started packing optional types of bases in kits.

As predicted in the other thread, optional bases in kits, extra pieces...

Coping with two types of bases: Part III

For new models drill holes in their feet and insert metal. Bundles of paperclip wire will do.

Finish both the round and the square bases with good flocking and paint jobs.

Embed earth magnets in both bases where the feet belong. Model snaps into position on whichever base is needed for the day.
