I played against the legions of chaos last night.
Despite a few errors in my listbuild (was rushing to get models together and get out the door), and an unwelcome miscast(which lost me the game), it was not a pleasant game.

Big bunch of Beastigors
10 Blight kings
Chariot and

1+ Bsb w/daemon mount
1+ solo hero with daemon mount

Everything had mark of Nurgle. There was nothing pleasant about it.

Has anyone had much experience facing any legions of chaos lists and what sort of tactics you can use to combat a 100% nurgle army?

That list is pure filth. I guess MSU list with Heavily defensive Ob:s and a Slann.

Take as many things as poss that negate the -1 to hit.

Lots of stegadons (impact hits and thunderstomp), lots of shooting/magic missiles, salamanders. High magic would work well with the No. 6 spell and the 4d6 str 4 magic missile.

Horrible list to play against though, I've never played against chaos legions, but thats how I deal with mono nurgle daemons or warriors which I have played a lot.

Tbh, you can make much scarier legion lists. 2x 3++ disc Lords, horror and chariots core, beasts of nurgle and chimeras spamming special, backed up by Skullcrushers/plague drones and skullcanons in rare. Yuck.

This is true.
However, the great weapon core is the killer. The great weapons basically take away the advantages that are built into our army book. Add -1 to hit and everything we have is next to useless.

I took an ancient steg and his first magic phase he knocked 4 wounds off it with a lucky D6 str3 hits with no armour. (yep, chaos legions now get the daemon rules for the winds of magic roll)



My list was:
Slann (loremaster, reroll dispel, +2 channels, eldritch, book of ashur, egg, bsb)
loremaster was a bad choice. I was in a rush and didn't think. I wanted Life
Oldblood (coldone, shield, sword of bloodshed, dawnstone)
Scar vet (coldone, great weapon, light armour)
chakax

27 saurus
20 saurus
4x 10 skirmishers with javs and champions

2x 5 chammos
10 cold one riders
25 temple guard with banner of discipline
3 terradons with bolas and champion

ancient steg (eotg)
2x razordons (extra snack)

I made a few list errors, and suboptimal choices. Razordons were chosen because they're the models i have. Chakax was chosen because I like him. And I should have taken the skavenpelt banner on either the slann or the TG. I just forgot. Oops

Yeah that's fair enough I like taking things because I like them, I'm terrible for taking giants in my ogre army even though there are so many better choices, but I think chakax is really overpriced for what he does you could get a second ancient steg for his points.
He got extremely lucky to wound your steg 4 times with that, but I'd take 2 stegs.
Also I think high lore master is such a great choice, I think life just doesn't work so well now you can't have loremaster

I like chakax. But when I take chakax, I make sure I take Life so that he has some form of a save outside of the challenge, and the extra toughness. HOWEVER, chakax did kill a chaos 1+ hero BSB on the daemonic mount without dying, himself. So that was good.

Once again, shout out to Light. I was getting some good success fighting Nurgle Warriors with light buffs.

That being said they are alll infantry units. Chaff them up, hit the flanks and drop Fiery Convocation on the Marauders/gor.

Yeah fiery convocation will ruin marauders and if they don't want to loose the unit will have to waste 4+ power dice to dispel in their magic phase, I love that spell!
I think points for points take gor-rok over chakax every time, I have had gor-rok kill a nurgle Prince twice, with gor-rok needing 5+ to hit works in your favour as you get rerolls and all hits are predatory fighter. I got 8 hits against the princes on both occasions, gor-rok shines against nurgle

I used chakax because i like his fluff and his model (which i did a minor conversion for), so that's the reason for his allocation in the list. ANd when I take him, Light rarely makes him survive, whereas life can make him potentially T9 which will ruin anyone's day. I also took no skinks to increase the magic range, which was dumb. As I said, I was in a rush.

I, too, like gor-rok, but i haven't painted him very well and it makes me sad.

I used to take life all the time when we could have loremaster, but the times I have taken it now we cant I have been very unimpressed. I think throne of vines, means you only have 3 spells to use, and a couple of them are very situational, the 5+ regen is good, +2 T is and dwellers, but you arent likely to have all of them and throne. I think high is much more versitile and light buffs the weaknesses we have, speed of light and birona's time walk are just amazing on saurus, if you are taking a saurus list I would say light is a must

I've had quite a few trials.
For a comp list, yeah Light is where it's at for me, but if I take chakax I MUST have life. Chakax is too expensive to lose due to his bad saves (in and out of challenges).
To offset the defensive nature of Life, it's always a good idea to take a basty and stegs. for the magic and non magic offense. Though I do like to play conservatively.

Yeah I can see why you go for life for chakax I think that's why I don't use him. He is just a liability, but I think it's good you play for fluff and don't just play unimaginative net list, I'm always playing my ogres with 3 giants because I love them, they are so much fun

Yeah.. I think if i were playing a Xlanhuapec Fluff army, I think it would need to be skink heavy with temple guard and a heavens slann. Which really is like stabbing yourself in the foot. But I might plan that next..
