8th Ed. First 1000 point army list

Hi Lustria,

New on the forum and already got a question for you guys! After leaving my (90% unpainted) lizardmen models standing for 9 years, I decided to get back to warhammer with my brother (who is building a WoC army). I'd like to share my first army list and hopefully get some nice tips! The idea is that I want to use as many models that I already have and allow me to experiment with the 1000 pts army (I didnt play that much 9 years ago and some rules have changed).

-Saurus Scar-Veteran: light armour, charmed shield, venom of the firefly frog, crown of command (140)

-Skink Priest: dispel scroll (90)

-15 saurus warriors: full command (195)

-10 skink skirmishers (70)

-24 skinks + 3 kroxigor (285)

-6 charmeleon skinks (72)

-Salamander (75)

-Salamander (75)

Total: 1002

For this list I would have to purchuase 2 salamanders and 10 skinks, which is not bad. Alternatively I also have 2 jungle swarms which could be used.
The list is 2 points too much; should I worry about this?
Heroes-wise I had no idea what I was doing. I just looked up some ''common choices''. I remember that dispel scroll is always usefull. Other than that the scar-vet will be in the saurus unit to make it stubborn.
My saurus unit is assembled with spears. After some reading on the forums it seems that spears is only worth it in a large unit. My brother won't mind me for using spear models so that's no problem. I really want to try out a Skrox unit (didnt exist when I started warhammer). The salamanders don't have an additional skink (I am already overcapped). I've never played with salamanders; do you use the 4th skink often?

Tips are VERY welcome! Maybe I will post some of my painting in the paint section if I figure out how to post images on forums

If your scarvet is safe inside a block of units your fairly safe from cannons etc so the charmed shield isn't so important. You could drop it for a regular shield (3pts) and you'd be at your 1000 pts even.

Otherwise your list looks great. You've got an anvil with the saurus and crown of command, and then smash into the side with the skrox unit. Dont' forget againist non elite units you can charge your salamanders into the flanks of units in combat for the +2 combat res and maybe even some wounds. (If theres nothing left for them to shoot at.

Nice cheap skink priest is the way to go here. Almost for sure take iceshard blizzard as one of your spells. It can stop a warmachine from firing in the first couple turns, and then gives the enemies -1 to hit and -1 leadership in close combat. Great spell.

Cool thanks for the tip! It feels better to be at the correct amount of points!
I'm not sure how the magic phase is going to look like; my first playoff will be against a khorne WoC army which is obviously melee oriented. I'm doubting whether I will even need a dispell scroll And my biggest fear is that my scar-vet will get slaughtered by his own hero. Nonetheless the list was not made for specifically fighting a single army, just to have some kind of starting point.

I don't think a scroll caddy is worthwhile at 1000 points. If you aren't making him level 2, so you can get off some spell most turns, his only value is the scroll, and that isn't worth 9% of your army.

I would keep the Charmed Shield and drop one chameleon.

WoC troops can drop him about as easily as their characters. That is the problem with combat heroes in general, and especially with putting something like the Crown of Command on a combat hero - not enough points invested in defense.

So your saying keep the charmed shield, drop a chamo, drop the scroll added a level 2 to the skink priest.

That would net out to -2 points which makes a perfect 1000.

That is the problem with combat heroes in general, and especially with putting something like the Crown of Command on a combat hero - not enough points invested in defense.

You're right; crown of command makes the saurus unit stubborn which is great; but it does take up 35 points which could be invested into the scar-vets own defense/combat abilities. Do you have any suggestions for alternative builds compared to charmed shield + venom of the firefly frog + crown of command?

I actually believe that my Scar-Vets equipment is ''illegal'' : venom of the firefly frog and crown of command are both enchanted items, meaning I shouldn't be allowed to equip both.

Alternatively, I thought of this:

Saurus Scar-Veteran: light armour, shield, venom of the firefly frog, dragonhelm, dawnstone (138)

This is actually 2 points cheaper, ''legal'' (I think?), and gives my scar-vet a high armor save which is rerollable. What do you guys think?
