8th Ed. Fighting Teclis

I came up against high elves the today, and long story short, My slann was taken out in the first turn by an irresistable pit of shades on a double 2.....

I was carrying the cube of darkness to attempt to shut off a magic phase, but irresistable casts on any double is mind blowing, and he negates his first double 6 miscast freely.

So with my slann out, I still managed to claw a draw out of it, just.

But it got me thinking. How the hell would we, as lizards, take him down! Bearing in mind, he had lore of shadow.

Thoughts anyone?

He is only toughness 2 and has no save, that is where his biggest weakness lies. Obviously when he does throw a bit of magic around, it is a very scary prospect so the key is trying to kill him as early as possible. This will also put a massive chunk in the opponent's army.

How? Possibly use spells that can directly affect him despite him being in a unit. Otherwise, need to try to destroy his unit or make them flee. Most HE units are fairly soft, mass shooting and magic then a strong charge could see him off. Might also be worth sending in a 'suicide' character who charges fast (flying or magic carpet or jag charm maybe) and just directs all attacks onto Teclis. The problem might come when their unit champ challenges, which is why it is a risky prospect, but worth it if it works.

In that game I did have 3 terradons harrasing the unit he was in, managed to take 10-12 out of about 20 of his unit in the 5 turns we played. I havent yet fielded chamo skinks, but I was thinking of doing that, maybe with oxyotl to snipe him as he's fairly cheap. Stuck in a unit of chamo skinks with the terradons supporting perhaps might be effective enough, besides, if teclis is in close combat he can only get hex's off

Again, as you were saying, a geared up scar vet could take the jag charm and challenge him. If he declines he wont be able to attack or cast? Im still grabbing the rules

The game was a great learner for me. Ancient stegadon with the blowpips was amazingly good.

Also look out for when they take the World Dragon banner or whatever it's called on the BSB in Teclis's unit. It makes the whole unit completely immune to any kind of magic, good or bad. Usually if the BSB is with Teclis and not with the main attack force, it's this banner- don't waste your curse charm yet!

Concentrated salamander fire + rock dropping + mass poison shots is all I can think of. I can't say for sure, as I haven't pulled it off.

This might be one of the times Oxyotl is worth paying for.

I'll try oxyotl soon, most likely saturday. Ill put up a list with him before then, see if I can get a nice balance. Throwing some chamo skinks in to take him head on.

He is a very scary character, but the toughness 2 seems like a saving grace if I can get to exploit it.

with the pit of shades you still get a "look out sir" roll because it still uses a template...just throwing that out there. and i find using the "6's don't count" discipline helps in the magic phase, which limits him to trying to get irresistable forcing him to throw more dice at a spell. killing him = salamanders and skinks (for when he might bail out of the unit).

Dwellers, blood statuette, suicide charge (even camo skinks can pull it off), lots of shooting to panic off the unit he's in... Teclis is a pain and anyone who uses special characters is a weak player; but he can be beaten.

Only challenge if he doesn't have a unit champion. If he does, then the champ will just accept and even if you kill it you will lose combat by their static res and would need to hope you can stick around. Just choose to direct all attacks onto him. But now that I think about it, that tactic is very risky against High Elves due to their ASF. What type of unit does he hide in? If it is swordmasters or white lions, probably won't work because they will cut you down before you can attack.

I am pretty certain that even if he rolls a double he has to meet the basic casting requirements to get the spell off at all. It isnt suufficient with just a double. Just putting it out there since 2 2:s seemed low when casting Pit of Shades.

I think this was in the FAQ but I might be wrong.

Wizards can still cast in combat, everything except magic missiles so i think he can still cast pit of shades as i believe its a direct damage spell.

But i would say sallies and chamo IMO

I too went up againts Teclis I was able to take him out turn 2 though, he did drop my stegadon in a pit though, There are a couple of ways to counter him, you could run a Blood Stattue of Spite for 25 points on a wizard, also if you get a skink with cloak of feathers and you either get chain lighitng or "that other spell" (uranors thunderbolt or somthing) You can easily get some wounds on him. As recomended above chamelion skins are amazing also if you are running a stegadon with a giant bow and manage to get a shot off at him that could help also, if your up against teclis you have got to do everything it takes to bring him down, but on the other hand if you do get him down thats alot of points you just killed, let alone the model that their list would be based around.

This is correct afaik. Rolling doubles other than double 6's does not autocast, it just makes it undispellable so he still has to meet the casting cost.

Wow, that makes life a hell of a lot easier, as a matter of fact, the pit that took my slann was a double 2 XD

This has all really helped, Ill maybe write a battle report of my next game against him to let you see how I do :3

Hey, you're right! It's right there in the High Elf FAQ; he now has to meet the casting requirements for the spell. This makes the world a better place!

Well to keep the ball rolling, are there any other particularly awkward characters to kill, I know teclis as one, say, A chaos warrior nurgle sorcerer. As they have magic resistance (3)

WOC Tzeentch Sorc with phylactery (I think that's the name-- it ignores stat tests and can't be poisoned), enchanted shield, 4++ ward item, and a few other odds and ends on a disc-- Flying, 2+AS & 3++ ward save, great statline... real pain in the butt to kill. I tend to ignore him and focus on killing the rest of the army. (Which not an easy task, WOC is probably one of our biggest challenges to face).

Indeed, Some of my close friends, the ones I play weekly. Play WOC and Deamons. Both of which seem pretty scary

For Teclis, the Bane Head/Feedback Scroll combo is one I find to be very effective. I slap it on a skink priest and watch him explode on his first decent sized cast.
