AoS dead for innumerable ages

Hey all,

New to AoS. I'm trying to understand Kroak's worthiness. It seems like every 2k starborne list runs him. But it just seems weird to me.

If someone gets a few wounds through one bad roll and he's just automatically slain?! Do you HAVE to roll Dead for Innumerable Ages or is it just if you want to risk it and try to heal him? Otherwise that seems like a ridiculously risky strange thing to have on such a high value model.

Also, what can you do with him against good shooting armies? There are a lot of enemies that would do serious damage, even with saurus guard, if he's within 12". And with the nerf to Arcane Vassal it doesn't seem like he's super useful out of range of everything...

Am I missing something?

You wont see him without two guard (to deflect wounds) and an astrolith to help compensate for that weakness(Trogladog also sometimes). well worth the risk given his mw output imo

Gotcha. What are the best spells for mortal wound output? Aren't most just D3?
