AoS converting to round bases

I've got plenty of Skinks and Saurus warriors so i'm going to put a few on round bases and build out those 2 "skink patrol" and "saurus host" warscrolls. My local gaming group has agreed we're going to measure base-to-base, not this "any part of the model" nonsense.

I've put 10 skinks on round GW 25mm bases and they fit very nicely.

I've got plenty of Privateer Press 30, 40, & 50mm bases. But before i go out and obtain more bases what base would you use for:

Saurus warrior/temple guard
Ripperdactal/Terradon riders
Saurus Cavalry
Saurus Old-Blood

Saurus warrios fit just fine on a 30mm PP round base. I've glued 1 on just as a test.

Ripperdactl/terradons feel like they should go on a 50 or 60. opinions?

Cavalry fit on a 50. any disagreement.

And finally, an old-blood. While it does fit on a 30 i wonder if it should go on a 40 to befit it's rank and station. Thoughts?
 
About the cavalry, GW is gonna put new oval bases on pre-order tomorrow, so you might want to take a look at that.

For the oldblood, yeh a 40 base would look nice, more space to add detail and bits :P
 
If/when I convert mine, I think that I'll carry all of the existing bases sizes over and match their diameters. Here's a chart from 2009 which matches a lot of base sizes to their models. We're on page 5.

I found a site with some nice, affordable bases recently: http://www.litko.net/categories/Bases-&-Base-Bottoms/Most-Common-Sizes/

100 25mm x 3mm plywood bases for $12, to give you a rough idea.

Never ordered from Litko before, though. Anybody have any experience with them?

Age of Sigmar uses the model not the base. Why go through the trouble of rebasing your old models? I don't see any tactical advantage to round bases. If you have keep the rectangular bases you can play Age of Sigmar and Oldhammer and Kings of War with the same models (they said an all scaly army is coming).
 
Although I myself am not going to rebase my models, I think it's a matter of preference. If the OP wants to do it then go ahead, and besides he wanted our help in choosing the bases that would better fit the models, not if he should do it or not :P

I do. Excellent firm.

I have sent them CAD drawings before to make custom trays and bases. Working with Litko or a similar firm it ought to be possible to create round bases that square bases could drop into. Or ovals that would receive a big monster base.

With a double layer base like above it would be possible to swap back and forth between rounds and squares.

I've found that model-to-model measuring doesn't really work. In the long run, it may. With current models, however, it doesn't really hold up. That is the one rule that a lot of people are overturning.

In my opinion, round bases are the way to go. They're best for Age of Sigmar. If you play WHFB, your round bases will probably be in a square movement tray regardless - arcs, then, can be taken from the movement tray. KoW, you'll probably just put a box of cereal or Ritz crackers on the board to symbolize the unit anyway... which doubles as a mid-game snack. ;)

One of the custom bases Litko made for me was a rectangle with round holes so I could use a mess of round-based D&D pre-paints to make a unit for Warhammer.

Well, the only models are getting round are my new Rippers, a little test. I don't seem to use Rippers much in Oldhammer. I will not be rebasing, fear of snapping poor Skink's legs off.
 
I agree that measuring from the model is absolutely absurd. It just lends itself to a whole slew of problems and abuse. The problem with measuring from the base in AoS is that there are no set base sizes. If one is to attempt to maintain even the smallest figment of balance in AoS, an established set of rules for base sizes must be created and agreed upon.

I thought that not even 8th has a rule for base sizes, though.

The rule was play the model on the base that it was supplied with (or the most recent iteration of it). There were a few problems here or there, but for the most part the bases were extremely well established.
 
Never saw that rule or suggestion or anything. Having a hard time finding it now. If it's unspoken, can't it stay that way?
 
Rebasing doesn't prevent you from playing Kings of War. There are companies that make trays that can fit models with round bases, and I would think more will emerge. I have based my Daemons on round bases for 40k, and will get some laser-cut MDF trays for Fantasy.

Interesting... why change the sizes themselves, though? Why not use the current diameters?
