So I know that cold ones seem over priced and Calvary isnt the best option in 8th but I was thinking for fun of building a unit of maybe 10-18 (not sure on size yet) but in concert give them the skavenpelt banner for frenzy and then using lore of light with the slann.

I believe that frenzy attack would pass to the mount since its giving the unit frenzy and from my interpretation birona's timewarp does the same. So that would be 4 attacks str 5 on charge from rider and 3 str4 from cold ones. Thats a lot of attacks.

Anyone know if this is wrong?
 
The skavenpelt banner affects only skinks so even a skink BSB in the unit will not give them frenzy. The lore of light buff will help but then you are reliant on the magic phase. Main problem with almost all cav in 8th edition is the inability to negate steadfast due to ranks. This turns the fight into a grinding match and a crap unit of skaven slaves (or equivalent cheap troops) worth 100 points could tie up a 300+ point unit of saurus cav for several turns - until the hellpit or something nasty decided to intervene and crunch them. Add in dangerous terrain checks and inability to occupy buildings and only small cav units seem to be of use IMHO.
 
IIRC, the skavenpelt banner gives Frenzy to all. All skinks in the army get Hatred and Frenzy. The skinks only refers only to the banner wielder.
 
I agree with all points it was really a fun idea but didnt notice it was skink only nvm then lol

the "skink only" text on the skavenpelt banner only means that only skinks can BUY the banner. it has no bearing what so ever on whom it can AFFECT. there are lots of items in the older books with these kinds of texts and i tend to use the dark elf "executioners axe" as an example.

it has "models on foot only" written in the description just like the skavenpelt banner has "skink only". no one in their right mind would argue that you can not attack cavalry with the axe because it says "models on foot only". it is so obvious that the "models on foot only" means that you can not BUY the axe for a dark elf on horseback. there is no reason to believe that the skavenpelt banner functions differently.


and yes, frenzy would affect the mounts too (as you said it gives the UNIT frenzy). And yes they will become quite punchy like that. but it is a death star, and one that is unreasonably easy to kill, due to the low number of wounds it has. most of the "spells of doom" will ignore the armour save anyway. On top of this, they have crappy initiative and risk losing fighting models before they even get to strike.

i am sure this could work, especially against unseasoned players. however i would think it very dull to play both with and against this unit.
 
I would debate the issue of what the skavenpelt banner effects but as LT has noted, it has been discussed at length in other threads. In this particular instance, another major tactical problem is with putting the banner bearer in a unit of CoC. The skink chieftain BSB can go either on foot or, if mounted, on a terradon. On foot, the unit would be charging 2d6 + 6" vice using swiftstride while it would have 3d6 + 2" if the chief was mounted. Either way, the unit's movement is quite restricted and, on top of all that, the BSB could be sniped by any template out there since they would not get a look-out sir. Given all these handicaps, I think the skavenpelt banner in CoC just isn't viable - until we get a new book :D

Here is what I would do. Buy the skink chief bsb a horned one and join him up with your cold one cav. Give them initiative 10 with your light slann and wreck face with a charge and frenzy.

i am sure this could work, especially against unseasoned players. however i would think it very dull to play both with and against this unit.

Why do you say that man?! I feel like this is a fast super killy unit that is kind of risky with a skink bsb to boot (extra risky). That sounds like it would be a rush!
 
The horned one would give the Skink Chief a look out sir as well.
 
Just wondering how a chief can get a horned one as a mount since my book only includes steggie, ancient steggie or terradon as a mount choice. Is there a FAQ I am missing?
 
look under enchanted items.
 
Just re-read the FAQ and found the entry :oops: Interesting that it is no longer even a magic item but simply a mount.
 
There reason for the FAQ is people disenchanting your mount.
now it just turns into a regular cold one if destroyed or negated.
 
In my next larger game (2500+), I think I may try a skink chief on a horned one.
 
Sad isn't it.

also the skink chief with the feathered clok cant have the sun staff,
even though there is a model of him with it.
 
Sounds like a fun unit to see in action. I do agree that it is risky and costly but I would like to see that in action. After all, everyone loves to watch when the death star explodes!!
