Scenery Citadel wood, fast and easy method

I was daunted at painting scenery before doing a workshop and now I would like to pass on my technique for painting a citadel wood, you won't win any awards but you will have a wood painted in a few hours.

PART 1: Trees

Step 1, spray the complete wood in a brown I have used Leather brown from army painter but black will do but it leaves harsh shadows.



Step 2: When dry take a medium drybrush and brush all over the trees and base with skavenblight dinge, make sure you do circular motions with your brush as you don't want to just catch the edges.



Step 3&4: do the same now first with mechanicus standard grey then dawnstone, don't worry about being neat or getting all over.



Step 5: take a smaller brush and drybrush the trees and wood on the base with pallid wych flesh.

PART 2: Leaves

Take a small drybrush or stipple brush and coat the leaves with xereus purple, use a stabbing motion make sure you do underneath near the edges.



Step 2&3: take jokaero orange and stipple again when dry do the same with loren green.

Step 4: now take skarsnik green and drybrush the edges and lightly go over random parts of the leaves.

Not bad, fairly reasonable autumn colors.

PART 3: Base

Step 1&2: take caliban green and drybrush all over avoiding the rocks and roots, then do the same with waaagh flesh.



Step 3&4: now take warboss green and drybrush again when dry take skarsnik green but this time drybrush the roots and the bottom of your trees to try and mimic moss.







At this point you can paint in the fine detail, wash the leaves with agrax earhshade or reikland, wash the trees etc etc.

It took 3 hours to paint 2 citadel woods and I hope you guys find it helpful.

Yep it will work for most scenery, they are not brilliant but better than not being painted.

Yup, really. But i totally understand not everybody can have such good taste as i do

But cant really explain why, but to me this kit never felt like a forest. Perhaps it is also because, such a forest kit will make all tables look identical, if you understand what i mean.

I know what you mean but what is a good alternative for a spooky looking wood? all the trees I see online are symmetrical shapes and look like green ice lollies!

haha, cant disagree with you about that. For spooky woods i intend to use some natural stuff i picked up from a garden centre around christmass time a few years ago....but that project has n't taken much shape yet (like so many other of my projects). I dont know the name of the stuff....but here i have a pic of my soviet snipers, where i used a tiny branch of the stuff. The bigger pieces are 10-20 cm high, so they make very nice dead trees.
