Any Way to do a D&D Campaign Through a Forum?

Hey I thought it would be sort of neat if we could actually do a D&D campaign over a forum like we would do a forum rp just with actual D&D rules. I feel like this could be possible with some rule tweaking for combat since we wouldn’t want to have to wait for everyone to be ready to see what they will do. What we could do is state something like “my character would attack the nearest goblin that doesn’t already have someone fighting it.” Or maybe the DM would post a pic of the layout and it would be something like “my character would attack goblin 3 if he is not being attacked or goblin 1 if goblin 3 is being attacked”. Then for damage etc you could roll and basically say “my to hit roll was a 14 by rolling a 12 and adding my +2 strength. If that hits I would do 7 damage by rolling a 5 on my long sword damage and adding 2 for my strength modifier.” Please respond if anyone would be interested in giving it a shot sometime or if anyone has any ideas.
 
You should check out Roll20. It is an RP site that has some pretty awesome tools built in. I am pretty sure they host a weekly adventure league as well.
 
People do this on ReaperMinis Forums all the time. (So, Yes, it is posssible...)

They have a special sub-directory for such things. ( Not sure if we have an area on L-O similarly dedicated.)
 
So would anyone be interested in starting a Lustria Online d&d game over the forum? I would rather not use discord because I don't really want to speak over a mic with people I don't personally know but I think we could try to start a campaign over the forum. I can do 5e 3.5 or Pathfinder. Don't know what works best for anyone of you if you're interested

A shorter adventure and have rolling for skills etc as they do. Basically I might say "Big Jim is going to walk through the woods (perception check 14)" then the DM might reply something like "as Big Jim is walking he notices a rustling in the leaves behind him...(insert next plot twist like goblins jumping out etc). Additionally look at page four to see how combat could work. I think this could be really fun. As for a DM I could do it but I am definitely not the best but if nobody else could I can do it.

We had something along these lines, it was a murder mystery but it was diceless. Scum and Villainy which sadly petered out.

To play D&D online effectively, at the very least you need a real time chat room. It can also be one with a Skype or video conference call.

With the forum thread system traditionally D&D would be impractible since it could be hours or even days between replies. Even to run a simply conflict between a pack of goblins and the PCs, the PCs and the Game Master probably have to talk to each to other fifty times. At the very least we need real time chat.

If L-O had a chat room or video conference set up, I see no reason to disallow an RPG, but we don't have that functionality. That kind of thing is not free and we do not charge members fees and we keep advertisers down to an extreme minimum. Lustria-Online is basically maintained pro-bono.

I don't know how much a general chat feature would be cost, but to run an RPG, you probably want a private chat. Maybe let others read it but you don't want to let lookie-loos overwhelm an ongoing game with their commentary.



Anyway, long story short, I like the idea but I don't think we can afford it. :(

Hold on a minute, the only reason that’s happened is because I was busy with university cr@p (which always gets in the way). When I get a chance I’m going to try to get back into it (also @DeathBringer125 was part of this game, so he knows about that)

Yep also lol dont think I'm trying to get out of it. I eagerly wait it's continuation. But I thought a D&D campaign might be neat as well.

this sound like a lot of fun let me know if it ever gets going id love to jump in.
 
Let me know if it gets going. I would be happy to do it over Discord or voiceless if people prefer. 5e is by far the easiest to GM of the listed systems.
 
I've seen guys playing on forums, but it's not so convenient...
