8th Ed. Adepticon Best General

I consider the stegadon, templeguards, kroxigors and ripperdactyls to be able to put some hurt, but they obviously aren't as effective..

But none of those things were present in the list posted in the OP, which is a fairly typical competitive list.

Does anybody know the guy or know if he's on twitter? It would be great to get in contact with him and ask if he can provide some battle reports.

Daly? No I do not, nor would I feel comfortable doing so unfortunately. I imagine if he had battle reports he would put them up on his channel, but /shrug.

Raf (3rd place at scgt) has a blog that he will likely update soon if he hasn't already.

Sorry, I meant Jeff Kent.

And yeah, I'm eagerly awaiting Raf's next blog.

Hi Guys, I'm Jeff Kent, been busy at work so only just saw this topic. Some replies below. As per the end of my replies I'm happy to do up battle reports of my games at Adepticon and discuss the games if people are keen. I didn't think there would be too much interest in what's a fairly conventional lizard build.

I'm on twitter @Kiwihammercast and I also run a NZ based podcast: http://www.kiwihammer.co.nz

For battle reports I still have some up at my old blog : http://littlewaaagh.blogspot.co.nz/

Let me know if you guys want more and I'll write it up. Cheers, Jeff

This list could have been plucked right from 7th edition with almost no alteration. The only change is basically the second slann for tetto. while its disappointing there has been so little variation, its nice to see the lizards can still be powerful when played well, which is ultimately what this list comes down to.

Exactly this except I usually used a party metal Slann, Tetto is amazing as the vanguards let the scar vets crack open gun lines without breaking a sweat. The army is still worse though with the new book and this is due to the Ld 5 on the skinks and points hikes.

Either way, i think it makes a pretty definitive statement on the effectiveness of some of the newer units, on the new slann, on tetto, and on terradons. 9 is a lot, even for a tournament list.

I own and have tested all the new units, they're trash in my opinion for competitive no comp gaming.

Looks like the 2014 ETC comp second draft aims to comp this build

Saurus Scar-Veteran on Cold One/Each 3 (or fraction) Salamander models, max 3
Becalming Cogitation/Dispel Scroll/Channeling Staff and Harmonic Convergence on the same model/Slann with Lore of Death (not including Wandering Deliberations), max 2
Skink Skirmisher units, max 4

saurus restriction i kind of understand, then again dont, more than 3 sauruses starts lacking good equipment .. and why restrict salamanders in the same area

wtf lore of death+channeling staff+harmonic not allowed.. uhhh wtf

skink skirmishers max 4!?

Are these things really that overpowered?

The quickest way to make a powerful list is to break as many of the ETC comp restrictions as possible.

Let me just preface by saying congratulations to Jeff Kent. He's clearly achieved something worthy of recognition and should br respected for it. My understanding is that Adepticon is a huge event and the top tables can get very competitive.

That being sad I'm not a fan of the list. Skink cloud points denial supported by Death Party Slann and Tetto'eko with Scar Vets to do all tbe heavy lifting. I'm sure that its effective but it doesn't look fun to play with or against. The OP summed it up fairly accurately by saying that it could be lifted straight from 7th. It's a fairly damning indicment of the current book that an irritating use of the old one is still so effective.

Cheers mate and to each their own. I'm a big fan of playing fast shooty armies which use maneuverability to get the win so I enjoy the playstyle. That said I found the new book a massive disappointment for exactly the reasons you stated.

never expected you to make an appearance! Very very cool!

I'll definitely check out both the podcast and blog when I get out of work.

Think I speak for everyone when I say massive congratulations, and how cool it is that you popped in.

I am curious of what you think about the scarnosaur. Is it ever viable? I originally thought a hero slot carno might make seeing them a little more likely, but i still don't see many competitive lists with them. Are they too big of a risk?

Hi Jeff, thanks for dropping by! I love reading battle reports, especially ones that involve the armies I play, so I would very much be interested in seeing them.

I've really found maneuverability and mobility to be one of the most interesting and fun aspects of the game as well. Its part of the reason that I enjoy playing Dark Elves so much, and why I've invested an increasing amount of time in adding more mobility to my Lizardmen lists through Terradons, Ripperdactyls, the Flyblood, etc. Its just a shame that Lizardmen seem to lack the combat punch outside of characters, and so have to over-rely on characters, shooting and fleeing.

=> Yes, please!

I'm really having a hard time making the army work and would love some insights, even if the end result is just "Yeah, looks like I am taking crap units." :)

I agree, would be awesome to hear.

Sweet guys, I've got a long weekend coming up tomorrow so I'll do up a quick podcast on my games. This should allow me to get the point across much easier than writing and saves me the headache of trying to do up diagrams (which is a pain when you have a bazillion units).

I'll aim to have it done by saturday/sunday.

Cheers. Jeff

hooray! podcasts are the best.

Anyone know of an app that transcribes podcasts?
I'm old, cranky, and don't trust files on peoples' sites. Thus I don't listen to podcasts.

:)

Adepticon is scored based on Win / Draw / Loss, but the magnitude of the win doesn't matter. This makes points denial lists relatively more powerful, as you don't need to cream your opponent to get max points. I would guess the "top" lizardmen list based on total VPs would look very different.

Also guys, have a read of this regarding my actual Best General award:

http://kiwihammer.co.nz/adepticon-best-general-or-not/

as you can read it turns out I did not in fact win Best General, though I did score the 2nd highest number of points from games.

Cheers. Jeff

Hm. That's quite unfortunate, but I largely agree with the opinion you have in the post.

Bummer there was a bit of confusion about it, but regardless it was still awesome to see lizardmen do well and I'm sure this doesn't change anyone's opinion on hearing those battle reports ;)

You're absolutely right that it makes denial lists stronger, which is the main reason I took the cloud (which can struggle to take out events under a 20-nil system). That being said the only reason I left units alive in 3/5 games in my opponents army was to allow them to take terrain pieces and get some points out of the match. Not what I would normally do in NZ but I was led to believe that this was a good way to get good sports scores in the Mid-West.

Realistically I got 4 wins (3 which would have been tablings) and 1 draw, the next best lizard got 3 win and 2 draws, so I'm pretty confident in terms of vp differential (because it's how many more than the other guy you get that actually matters) that I would have been right at the top of the lizard lists based off of this.

Cheers. Jeff
