8th Ed. 50% Heroes/Lords and the Troglodon

So, a lot has been talked about the 50% Heroes/Lords rule within those categories, but there hasn't been much discussion about that rule affecting choices in the rest of the army list.

Many people have seized on the idea of flooding the battlefield with OBs and SVs. The numbers can be pretty crazy, we're finding. But all of these attacks are PF attacks, so does anyone feel that makes the Troglodon more appealing now?

Trogs are mostly effective in a "MSU" army, where the enemy has tons of large, viable targets. It's also a decent arcane vassal.

With 50% Lords and 50% Heroes, every unit in the lizardmen army is now subject to the harsh judgement of whether the points would be better used on a saurus character, and this is a judgement in which the Troglodon is found wanting. At a similar points cost to an oldblood with a hundred points worth of extras, and considerably more than a mounted scarvet plus magic item allowance, it is, if anything, more obsolete than ever. Assuming its roar affects a combined total of 24 scarvet/oldblood attacks, it will grant an average of 4 extra attacks, for one round. A scar-vet will provide the same amount of extra attacks any turn it is in combat.

I'd say it's a decent point.

More heroes and lord, with a Kroxigor block to help out.

That's a lot of str 7 PF attacks, better yet, saurus cav units fit in b2b with kroxigor - present the Kroxigor star, as follow

KC - Kroxi champ
SV - Scar vet (or OB, your pick)
KR - Kroxigor


SV SV KC KC SV SV
SV SV KC KC SV SV
KR KR KR KR KR KR
KR KR KR KR KR KR

Sadly the second may or may not get PF (depending on location and interpretation), but the above unit cannot lose a krox untill they lose the champion krox, and all of the remaining front rank is tough as nails.

The nearby presence of the trog (not pictured) makes PF attacks on 5 and 6's, assuming scar vets that's 20/3 extra attacks, so 6.667, half of those from the Trog.

Increase the frontage - increase the reward.

The benefit isn't super, or OP, but it isn't noting, 3 str 7 attacks hurt. having OB's amongst also increases attacks! and it gives the options for various saves for the krox, MR 3, and 6+ vs Warmachines being good choices.

I don't believe it is super competitive, but it would be fun to see how that star would do.

Kroxigor base is 40x40 mm
Cavalry base is 25x50 mm

It doesn't fit

You can go 2x2 Kroxigor formation with 2 Saurus characters at each side (wich it would allow your Saurus to be b2b against a 5 wide r&f unit but not against a monster). Or 1x3 with the champion in the first Rank.

I have already run this kind of formation and I have to say, the loss of 1" and Swiftstride can make a real mess in your plans and end up losing.

Also , no Look out Sir.

So cold one bus is still better option.

The Look out sir is hardly a problem, Scar vets are regularly run in units that do not allow them look out sirs, so it would never go and be the reason behind joining or not joining a unit, the only important fact is whether they can join or not, and they can, that offers protection against BS bases shooting, so unless they start cannoning your vets, or catapulting them (very precise catapulting at that) it won't matter, admitted, that cannoning them is a real possibility.

I'm quite certain you're right the bus IS better, but that doesn't necessitate that the krox with vets are useless, it's definitely a better combo with the Troglodon though, since the extra attacks will always be higher strength, and that is (after all), what this post is about, the Troglodon. That said, it really does seem a lot worse since you brought the fact about the bases into attention...
