8th Ed. 2500 point list, March of the Stegs

So, as mentioned in my last list, I am going to be part of a badlands campaign, and need 3 lists. Our group is going for themes and fun over cheese and beard, so here is my second list, "The March of the Stegadons." Basically, I need some advice and help running it. I know Ogres and Cannons will be a problem, but I don't think of everything myself.

Lord
Old blood, Armor, Enchanted Shield, Blade of Realities, Talisman of protection. 250 points

Heroes
Skink priest, Level 2, Steggy. 390 points
Scar vet, BSB, Armor, Shield, Standard of Discipline. 133 points

Core
40 Saurus, Full Command. x2 940 points

Special
Steggy 235 points

Rare

2 more Steggys. 550 points

Total, 2498 points.

Now I would never take this to a tournament, but I'm just hoping to hammer and anvil the shit out of stuff with Stegs and hordes.

Questions, comments, concerns, advice, help?
 
Sounds like a fun campaign! I might try and convince my group to do one.

First of all, IMO, the blade of realities is awful. Lose it.

Standard of discipline is probably overkill. I'd probably try and beef up his armor save.

Do you have another stegadon? It could be fun to replace the scar vet with a chief BSB on stegadon. Might be pushing the point cap though.
 
The blade of realities is pretty much an insurance plan against the horde of ogres one of my friends run. I tried for chief with war spear, I can't do more than four in this list, because I can't take named characters in the campaign. If I could, I'd take Tehenhauin, and put him on one.

But I know the blade is over priced and damn near useless. I think I'm going to replace it in the near future with a Piranha and a bane head, and bee line at the general.
 
I don't know if that would change too much (or if you have the right number of models) but if you replaced the Saurus Warrirors with Skroxigors your entire army would have a base move of 6.
 
I don't have kroxigors to do it, otherwise I'd have skinked it all. I just start the Saurus ahead so they can go be anvils, and the stegs can get the charges off anyways
 
Nice, that's a pretty alternative lizard list, it's nice to see someone doing something different.

I think it could work well if it catches someone by surprise because often people don't have enough to deal with 4 stegs
I would maybe mount the old blood on either a carno or cold one to allow him some greater flexibility,

I actually saw a list like this at a tournament once, 4 or 5 stegs, did okay in a few games, people don't expect it and often don't bring the tools to kill 5 stegs quickly (although his list had a slann) but they did come across a HE list with level 1 metal Mage, basically a steg a turn was removed by the signature spell and they lost 20-0 but other than that
 
what about switching the ancient Stegadons for two baby stegs? Then you could fit a skirmish skink unit or salamander.
 
I might test it, but I prefer the giant blow pipes over the great bows. They're only strength 5, and there are two Chaos Warrior players, 1 ogre player, a dwarf player, and a deamon player. Theres a lot of toughness 4 in this campaign, and only punching through one rank before I wound on a 4 will suck. Thats why I like the fire saturation of the blow pipes, and the higher chance of poisons if you just roll a lot of dice
 
I agree on the blow pipes but he army seems like it coud use some throw away units
 
So, I think I'm going to drop the great bow steggy, Add another rank of ten Saurus to each horde, and the potion of speed to the Old Blood, to cap his gear at 100 points. Because I really want my hordes to remain steadfast against the casualties the ogre horde will inflict if it charges.

And I want my oldblood to be able to go possibly toe to toe with the nastier stuff my friend's demon army will have in store for me.

Namely, greater deamons, because if I remember correctly (i probably don't) they have average leadership, right, and I believe initiative 7 can keep up with all of them but the Keeper of secrets.

I ask now, because once our armies earn some renown, they can no longer be edited.

If I do this, I have a grand total of another 12 points to spend. I could drop 2 saurus from the favored horde, so it's an even 50 with the characters in it, so now I have 33 points to spend. Could give the Skink a dispel scroll now, Itxi grubs, or Plaque of Tepok (since on engine of the gods, he gets an additional +1 to cast, so now he really is a level 3 skink!!!!!

So, what do you guys recommend/think?
 
Stegadons are about doing impact hits, terror, and thunderstomp. If you're using the bow/blowpipes regularly, then something's going wrong. I would stay with your theme mate, try and get all those stegs in there!
 
Only problem is i don't have sallies. But, I think I have the right bases, so I could easily proxy them.

But I can't have the dragon helm and enchanted shield, they're both magical armor
 
I think EOTG skink priests should have Ward saves since they die a lot easier than the Stegadons they ride. At least an Opal Amulet. A Talisman of Preservation if you can afford it.

you can have both unless I'm seriously mistaken. I think it says one shield and one magic armor.

you can have both unless I'm seriously mistaken. I think it says one shield and one magic armor.

No, you can only one magical item from each of the five magical item categories (bearing in mind you must be allowed to take an item from the category in the first place)
Both enchanted shield and dragonhelm can be found in the magical armour section of the rule book, therefore you are only allowed to take one of them
 
Ok, this is just me, but I find that units of 30 Saurus at 6x5 for HW/S or 30 at 5x6 w/spears are more than enough to hold an enemy unit up for a turn if that is what you need them for.

If you dropped them down to that number you could free some points up for some more points to afford an ancient. S6 does matter, don't even think for a sec it doesn't.

And if you turn one steggy into an ancient, you free up some space in the special area to buy a unit of chameleon skinks. These guys would be kill to pop an enemy cannon which could pop a steggy easy... Just a thought!

If you are fighting elves it doesn't matter but for pretty much everyone else it does.
 
In my other lists, I run 6x5 with hand weapons, but this list, I wanted some super anvils. Hordes of Ogres can do some damage if they get that stupid 10+ charge
