I'm playing a friendly game to break a long dry spell of not playing an actual game. Against Orcs and Goblins. I plan to experiement with Lore of Fire. I got two Skink Priests to serve as targeting systems, one with the Forbidden Rod to serve as a battery if need be.

I’m taking almost every precaution to protect the lone Slann except I’m not making him ethereal. I’m making the Scar Veteran the BSB because I am paranoid about a lone Slann breaking and autodying. With skinks to help him target magic missiles he can keep his distance. I figure the main thing that could theoretically catch the Slann would be wolf or spider riders. I should be able to zap them with fire before they get to me. If not the Cascading Fire Cloak and Crown of Command will take care of the situation before they can the Slann down (or so I hope)

Skirmishers are for protecting the skink priests and for taking down things lone monsters. I want to test Stegadon versus Kroxigor for flank support for Saurus. I alsos think I’ve been under utilizing Terradons. I have 90 point units of Chamo Skinks and Terradons specifically so I can compare and contrast them on a point for point basis. I plan to run the same spread of 270 points of Chamo Skinks and Terradons in every list for the next few battles unless the point size goes up in which case I’ll run 120 point units. There should be plenty of high toughness low armor save units for five poison shooting skirmishing units to shoot at. My only misgiving is that I only have two standard infantry blocks. Hopefully the Salamanders will be able to panic a goblin unit or two and even things up on that regard. If Salamanders don’t work hopefully fire spells will.

Plan to follow with a battle report later

The biggest threat to the slaan is going to be getting wounded rather than broken with the crown of command (LD on 3 dice with a re-roll). There is no point IMHO taking the crown unless you plan on putting him in a unit so that they can benefit from being stubborn. If he is in the unit, then he can be attacked and without the lore of life to heal him even regular troops will grind him down over time. If you want to run him solo, drop the crown and give him either ethereal or the 2+ ward vs ranged. Also, a skink priest could be replaced by the ruby ring to give the list 3 different magic missiles to cast while also freeing up points for other stuff.

I think I will take your advice on the Crown of Command. I thought about the Ruby Ring of Ruin but wouldn't that be a bit redundant with a Fire Slann on the table?

Aren't two fireballs better than one?

Does the lore attribute work with bound fire-spells? I thought it did but haven't managed to find a reference in the brb or FAQ. If it does that would be quite useful or does the d3 not offset the natural 1/2 loss of concentration?

Q: If a bound spell is from a Lore of Magic with a lore attribute,
will the successful casting of the bound spell also trigger the lore
attribute? (p37)

A: Yes. It is worth noting that some lore attributes effects
targets the Wizard casting the spell. In the case of Bound
Spells it will target whoever is casting the spell instead.

Hope this helps ;)

I knew I had read it somewhere just couldn't find it, must look harder next time!

Kindleflame provides a strong argument for taking the Ruby Ring on a Skink backing a Fire Slann. I'm going to actually play the game in a few hours, time to start packing my minis into the carrying case!

Revised List is as follows:

Slann, Three Disciplines: Power Die, Lore Master, Ethereal, Lore of Fire, Crown of Command, Cupped Hands

Scar Veteran, BSB, Iron Curse Icon, Light Armor, Dragonhelm, Burning Blade of Chotec, Shield
Skink Priest, Dispel Scroll, Ruby Ring of Ruin
Skink Priest, Forbidden Rod

25 Saurus Warriors, Full Command
