8th Ed. 2250 pts list - Something to think about.

So I thought about taking 2 lords in a 2250 pts list and here is what I came up with.

Slann - 345 pts

Saurus Old Blood - 216 pts
- Light Armour

- Sword of the Hornet

Total Lords: 561 pts (24.9%)

Scar-Veteran - 133 pts

- Burning Blade of Chotec
- Cold One

Total Heroes: 133 pts (5.9%)

Saurus Warriors x39 - 498 pts
- Spears
- Full Command

Skinks Skirmishers x10 - 70 pts

I still have 27 points to spare, dunno on what yet.

Now there's a lot of things that can be tweaked about this army, but the main idea was having two lords in it with to really solid blocks of infantry, some good shooting and at least one hard flanking units. What do you guys think about having 2 lords??? Should I take a Skink Priest instead of the Scar-Vet??? I'm trying to go for an all-comers list and I only have 1000 pts or so as we speak (you can find my 1000 pts list here http://www.lustria-online.com/threads/1000-pts-list.4311/).

IMHO 40 saurus is way too much. I'm assuming you'll be fielding them in a 10X4 which is an idea I played with (10x3). But after reading what others had to say about a unit with that wide of a frontage it doesn't seem worth it. You'll have to be fighting an equally wide enemy unit to make use of all the attacks that the saurus unit can through out and if you're not you run the risk of being duel charged and not being able to reform at the end of combat. I think the best unit width for lizards is still the 6 wide formation making a unit size of 30-36 models the optimum amount to maximize attacks, ranks and casualty absorption. And if need be you can still field them 10 wide.

But then you have to look at cost. A unit of 30 costs roughly 400 pts. A unit of 36 roughly 460 pts. That's with spears and full command. Now are those costs maximizing unit effectiveness with detracting from the functionality of the rest of the army? Keep in mind that a skaven player can field the same size unit plus a weapons team for roughly half the points. And that maximizes their effectiveness. Saurus on the other hand are equally effective at much smaller unit sizes and you don't waste points on models you are never going to use. So, I think saurus unit sizes of 24-25 (6x4 and 5x5 respectively) optimize ranks, attacks and cost to maximum efficiency, especially when there are two saurus blocks being fielded. If there is only one then take a block of 30, maybe.

As for TG, I think a block of 20 (6x4 including slann) or 16 (5x4 including slann) is all that you need.

Now if you decide to drop the number of saurus down to 24 you'll end up with about 207 pts left at which point I would say, yes, take a priest. Keep him lvl 1 and give him some anti-magic goodies or some weaker offensive goodies to try and draw out your opponents dispel dice. And assuming you take a priest and max-out his magic items you'll have enough for a unit of 3 terridons.

As to the double lord, I think it could work out fine. A nice balance between combat and magic.

By the way, this is all theory since I have yet to play an actually 8th edition game. I've played a few rumor games before the rule book came out but little has changed from the rumors we used and the actual rules.

I still have 38 points to spare, dunno on what yet. I'm thinking about dropping the standard in the Skrox unit in order to get a Magical Standard, any advice on that??? I think this army would be pretty flexible, with 2 solid blocks of infantry, 2 solid flanking units, 2 skirmishing units and 2 war monsters. I have some shooting, some staying power, some magic defense and possibly magic offense.

Looks good to me . I went for a Slann/Old Blood combo to try and achieve balance between CC strength and Magical strength. That being said, I would have loved to try an Oldblood on Carno/ Cheap Oldblood combo, but that would only leave me with 67 pts for magic items at 2250, not viable unless I'm playing at 2500 pts I guess.
