8th Ed. 2000 point Magic heavy list

Heya guys,

This will be my first foray into Warhammer Fantasy and I would like to play a magic heavy Lizardmen list.

I've drafted up, what I think to be, an okay list, but come here seeking advice from seasoned players.

So here it is as it stands at the moment.

Also I feel I should mention that the money I can put towards this is... limited, hence the 16 strong squads of saurus instead of 20 (what with the boxes containing 16 and all).

Unfortunately you can only use magic items once per army. So only one skink priest can have the Plaque of Tepok. Same with Ixti Grubs.

I think it's silly that the box of saurus only comes with 16 models. They could add another sprue and get 20 pretty easily. But anyway...

Drop your saurus to 15 per unit. Most enemies you face will have their units at least 5 models wide. Plus that way you will be able to claim rank bonuses when you get into combat. Otherwise combine them and make a unit of 30. You can convert the remaining two into pretty sweet Scar-Vets or Oldbloods since you seem to have the Temple Guard box as well. There are all sorts of fun accessories in there.

Drop the rank and file skinks and swap them out for skink skirmishers in units of 10 each. Skinks are pretty useless in combat and they are less maneuverable when they are bunched up like that, unless you are using them as (literally) cannon fodder. If you really want a block of skinks, add a couple Kroxigor in their midst to give them some fighting potential.

Dont forget salamanders! They are awesome. I'd be willing to drop the Temple Guard or the Stegadon to get a few of those guys. If you don't have the models, then oh well. You can survive without them.

Good start! You'll really figure your armies strengths and weaknesses as you play more battles.

I really appreciate the help you guys give, I just want to make sure that the units I get won't be a waste of money, if you know what I mean. But I think I've crammed in as much Magic as I can

I like it. If you get an extra handler for each Salamander, you will square your army up to 2000 points. Plus that way you don't have to worry about your Salamander going crazy and eating all his handlers in one big chomp!

Personally I like to have all my Saurus units (including Temple Guard) run in 6x4 formation. So for two units of Saurus, that means 3 boxes! And for a TG bunker, that means 2 boxes! Nice, eh? Of course that will cut into your points even more, so you'll probably have to prioritize your characters a little bit if you want to follow through with that.

Since I started talking about logistics for buying and fielding your army, if you get 1 box of skinks, 1 box of Saurus, 1 box of TG, and finally the LM battalion, you'll be set up with a great core to build off of. That way you have a grand total of 40 skinks, 36 saurus, 20 TG, and 8 cold one riders. That's good for 4 units of 10 skirmishers, 2 decent 6x3 saurus blocks, a good TG bunker for your Slann, and a nice little hammer unit. Comes to around 1400 points, depending on how you build it.

I'm sorry but a 10 man TG unit is not good, the minimum size for me is 12. 4 in a rank, just to cover the Slann, he gives them Stubborn so no need for combat Res. And why there is no BSB?

Unfortunately the box is 10 strong and I can't really afford, at the moment anyway, sheling out extra for just 2 more TG.

And as for the BSB my TG have one or does the totem somehow affect how the standard works? or are you referring to another squad, or Have I completely misunderstood?

Sorry if these are really newbie questions but I am a newb so... bare with me, and I appreciate the help.


EDIT Nevermind I finally managed to find the article on battle standards in the army book and I have edited my army list accordingly.

Hello,
The BSB is the Battle standard Bearer. You can nominate 1 skink chief, Scar Vet or Slann to be the BSB, he can give rerolls for LD tests. And you can give him a Magic Banner but then you can't give him any magic items.

I'm not a big fan of the Carnosaur Pendant. I feel like I need to control whether or not I should make a charge with my TG. With the Pendant you always have to try to charge. That can put you in a battle that'll take your Slann's spell arsenal out of play (because it's out of your front arc, no line of sight, etc.). I would recommend that you switch that item out for your first few games and then decide if you would be ok with giving away that control.
