8th Ed. 1500 Oldblood list

Hi Guys,

So I just got the new book and I wanna try out some new stuff! Main Ideas for the list: Trying out stuff (Cold one Cavalry, Skink priest with lore of beasts, Ancient steg with engine and sharpened horns, new magic items). I am naturally interested in trying out a Slann list as well, but im quite interested in testing a cold one cavalry list with an equipped Oldblood supported by a skink priest:

Total = 1499

Any suggestions are welcome. I might have a chance to test the list on saturday.

Please do not post individual points costs for units.

Your list looks pretty solid.

Just a couple of points:
Do you really want spears on your unit of Saurus? You do have the 6+ ward from the stegadon, but only after a few casualties you start missing out attacks. HW/S might be better, unless you could find the points for some more saurus. But it's hard to squeeze some more in.

Do you want both the Standard ánd the musician on the SCOR? I understand that both your saurus characters will go here, but it's quite a small unit for both command units. Maybe worth considering.

You feature good support with your skinks, and very strong combat power with your saurus.
Some more bodies on the saurus would be nice, as well as some terradons to chase fleeing units maybe.

Also; I edited your post to remove the individual points cost on your units

Looks like a fun list! One minor tweak I'd make is swapping out the Cube of Darkness for the regular scroll. The scroll just seems more reliable, and with the 5 points you save you can put a dragonbane gem on the priest. You never know, the priest might find a flaming magic missile directed at him, and he wouldn't have to worry with the gem.

Thanks for your comments! I actually have spear saurus, and wanted to see if it's worth it (I usually ended up saying they were HW/S). The Engine of the gods was indeed meant to supply a 6+ ward save and also to ease the spellcasting for the skink priest and provide a bound spell.

The Old blood can join the cold one unit or go off on his own, depending on the enemy. I figured a champion was unneccesary in the SCOR, but a musician for moving and a battle standard for combat points might pay off.

The Scar-vet BSB is not on a cold one; he is meant to bolster the saurus-spear block. Originally I wanted the spear block to be 24 saurus + scar-vet, but I couldn't find enough points. I also considered terradons but I just don't know where to find the points.

I could swap out the steg for a bastiladon with a solar engine, take some extra saurus and try to squeeze in terradons, but then I'd lose the casting bonus for my skink priest. When I first made the list I was at ~2k points the first time I added up on the points... really frustrating!

I wanted to try the cube just for giggles (same reason I wanted to try the stegadon helm instead of a dawnstone + armour of destiny) but replacing it with a scroll and dragonbane gem sounds like a good plan!Thanks

I like it. Maybe Solar Bastiladon in for the CoC. It'd be a decent long range threat and alternate use of magic dice should you under cast with priest. Making them choose between a unit getting hit by this or getting wyssans off may be enough to get them conservative with dice and getting both or more. His thunderstop and stay-ability against low S troop make him ideal to stick in and hold them or side charge. His attacks and thunderstomps should be enough too not lose to rank and banner.

You don't need an engine of the gods with only 1 skink priest. You have two spells... You will have the dice to cast both almost all the time. 6+ ward isn't worth much since you won't have 3 units in range of it very often.

Just save the points and take an ancient steg. Add more saurus or find a way to slide a salamander in.

Once you take 1 casualty on your cold ones, your oldblood wont be getting a lookout sir. Not a safe place for him to be.

What magic items do you think are not worth it? I guess you are right about the EOTG; I could leave it out. But then I wouldn't have a bound spell anymore --> I want to be able to use my power dice, even though I only have a level 2 wizard. Maybe I will try the EOTG for a larger point value. I can still proxy my spear-saurus and say they are HW/S (friendly players).

You are right about the cold ones; I'd like to field more but I can't find enough points for it. I thought maybe I could field the cold ones as a unit of 5; they can either deliver the old-blood (for at least 1 round or so) to combat or they can enter combat themselves. Toughness 6 should help against boltthrowers, he still has a 4+ ward save. My main concern is lore of metal incase he has to go alone.

I think a Solar Bastiladon is just what I need if I don't want to use the EOTG. It gives me a magic missile bound spell, and I figured the other 150 points could be used to take some extra saurus and a salamander. I'll post a new list below; maybe I'll try out both.

Your oldblood build doesn't seem to contribute enough for 1500 pts imo. Seems like you have him built like you are fighting enemies in 2500pts. He has the same ld as scarvets and reg saurus, his weight in saurus, an ancient steg etc are probly more worthwhile.

If you took a nude oldblood with a 1+ AS, that'd be all you need for 1500. This really all depends on your meta. If you are seeing things in your local battles that you need the other tricksters shard for, then take it, but if you are tailoring to one kind of unit from a specific opponent, you should find another solution. What's your meta?

Yeah the oldblood is maxed out on gear; he might be more suitable for a 2000 or 2400 match. But still... if you take an oldblood, wouldn't it be silly to give him no gear? A nude oldblood with 1+ AS would only be more expensive than a scar-vet with a 1+. I think that an oldblood is meant to have good magic items (4+ wardsave as an example).

As for local meta; I usually play against my brothers who play WoC (third eye of tzeench imba wardsave crap) and Darkelves (pendant of khaeleth) so trickster's shard is a good one

Anyway you have a valid point; the oldblood is expensive for a 1500 list. But the 1500 list is just meant to try out the idea of an oldblood list with CoC; if I like it I might try a 2.4k list with oldblood on coldone, 9 coldone riders, 2 skink priests with lore of beasts, bastiladon (solar) and EoTG steg if i can manage to make it fit
