Are they any good?

Long ago, before the Disney, before even the prequels. A bunch of authors wrote a continuity of Star Wars novels that focused on the struggles of the Rebellion to set up a New Republic. Now this series is called "Legends" as opposed to "canon".

The "Thrawn Trilogy" is widely considered to be the best one.

It introduced some new characters people really liked. Especially Grand Admiral Thrawn.

One of the big things of "Legends" is that the Empire ate itself after Palpatine died. If Palpatine had a clear successor, the Empire could have easily crushed the Rebellion post-Endor, but the about 200 Imperial officials all auditioned to be the next emperor and they ate each other. This gave the Rebellion breathing room to start a New Republic and eventually a lot of Imperial world asked to be join.

Admiral Thrawn was the smartest of the emperors former officers. And he was able to bring the New Republic to its knees despite having fewer men and ships than they did.

I still maintain that had Qui Gon not died in Episode I, Anakin would not have turned.

No question. There is more than one lengthy Youtube video on this.

Really, Palpatine's plan had so maybe moving parts, a butterfly flapping it's wings could have wrecked his plan.
