Poll: Save two television shows, the other seven must go...

You can only save two of the following television shows, the other seven are gone forever (including all your memories of them), which TWO do you save?

This this is a super easy choice for me. Two of these shows happen to be among my top 5 favourite shows of all time.

I'd save:

1. Samurai Jack (my 2nd favourite show of all time)
2. Seinfeld (my 4th favourite show of all time)

As for the rest, the only one I've seen is the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

I've seen a couple episodes of all of them, but I only really liked four. I reference or quote Gravity Falls and Phineas and Ferb on a weekly basis.

Seinfeld hasn't seemed to have aged well. I liked it at the time, but it's not timeless like a lot o the others.

Samurai Jack was an awesome show but it was mostly cool because of the animation more than the story. Like the James Cameron Avatar movies, though admittedly better written. I'd miss Samurai Jack (or not) but it's less important in my brain than Gravity Falls and Phineas and Ferb.

I've always thought the opposite. It remains relevant.

You are correct, and it's not even close.

I would say Phineas and Ferb narrowly beat Samurai Jack for me.

Of my top five favorite shows, it's the one I can show to other people and be near guaranteed to enjoy it.

There are other shows that a had a formative effect on my childhood and possibly the person I became.

I'm not sure I would have had become a fan of fantasy the way I am today if not for Gargoyles. I once dressed as Darkwing Duck for Halloween as a kid. Even younger at Disney World, I was thrilled to meet Chip and Dale because of the Rescue Rangers show. I was blown away by the animation of Reboot, and there was a time skip between season 2 and season 3 where the show became darker and edgier so I went from 10 to 14 and a show I liked as a child grew up with me. It might have pushed to be a better writer showing how even a seemingly silly show can have great character arcs.

Batman the Animated Series paved the wave for a vast animated universe and inspired me to dress as Two-Face for Halloween in high school in an attempt to capture the magic of childhood trick-or-treating. Batman TAS spun off into seven or eight other shows, all good.

None of these shows hold up as well without nostalgia colored glasses. I believe Gravity Falls may be truly timeless.

I think Avatar: the Last Airbender is similar but I am very late to the party with this one. I watched the show for the first time at the spring chicken time of my life of 39 years old, so it didn't shape me much as a person. Granted, I saw Gravity Falls in my mid twenties which isn't much better.

If we remove nostalgia, in what way do you think Batman TAS no longer holds up well? Why is it not timeless in your eye like Gravity Falls or ATLA are?

Of those, I'd only save The Office if it was the British version, which, judging by the different logo, it is not. And possibly Samurai Jack, as I watched a couple of Aku clips a long time ago after seeing all the chat about it on here and found them amusing.

Not a good selection of choices for me because I only watch British TV 99% of the time (the only American stuff I'm anyway a fan of is golden-oldie classics like Tom and Jerry and Looney Tunes).

Gravity Falls for very similar reasons to @Scalenex Though I saw it in my early 20s for the first time

Fresh Prince as my second because me and my friends had a whale of a time lauging through all the YTP vids and still reference them.

What about Samurai Jack... timeless or not?

Samurai Jack is too niche to be a timeless classic. It is awesome at its niche but its not universal. I remember the first time I saw the premiere. I was working at a summer camp and most of were in the 19 and 22 range but the camp director's son who was ten was there and he got dibs on the TV first before a large crowd got in and they politely did not change the channel. But I can tell I was pretty much the only person in the room besides the ten year old in the room who liked it.

I added Batman TAS as an afterthought edit after writing the post. It's pretty timeless and iconic. But most of the old TV shows I like are pretty niche and almost all of them are animated. But it wasn't on your list of TV shows.

To reiterate, I think Gravity Falls wins for me on this list at least because the themes are pretty universal. Even people who don't care for cartoons usually like it. The characters are relatable, the jokes almost always land, and the plot twists are hard to predict.

I enjoyed that show as well. It's been ages since I've seen it though. I liked the other Star Gate shows too.

Atlantis somehow passed me by and I've never gotten around to watching it after the fact... think I saw the first season of Stargate Universe, wasn't specially into it, but a appreciated it for trying to be different.

This is where I got the title wrong... It was Stargate Universe where they were trapped on the Ancient ship, right?

British comedy versus American comedy... I can't remember the distinct difference enough to word it, but there is a YouTube vid floating around that breaks down the cultural differences between UK and American sitcoms somewhere. If I stumble across it, I'll post it here so you can be educated.

But as to better or worse, it's all subjective, else the Americans would be using the clearly superior British humour instead of their paltry imitation.
