In the interest of playing Devil's Advocate.
This is a guy who is not woke (far from it) and is a long-time 40K fan who primaries the Custodes and he doesn't have a problem with the lore change, but he makes a clear distinction for why female custodes are okay and female space marines are not okay.
His interpretation and supposition fits the facts, and it provides an explanation that GW actually was sitting on this idea a long time and are not "going woke" or being extorted by Amazon or Black Rock.
I hope he's right. I don't think he's right, but I hope he's right.
I find the more plausible theory that I've seen a few places.
1) Amazon wanted female Space Marines for their upcoming show
2) Games Workshop did not want female Space Marines
3) Female Custodes was a compromise
4) the leak of Custodes was a GW employee wanting to draw blowback to signal to GW and Amazon that "This was a bad idea and female Space Marines would fly even worse."
Evidence for this theory is GW put in a snippet of lore to justify a female custodes character in the show but they didn't release a model to back it up, so they aren't really invested in this.
There are other theories too. I'm waiting for facts.
I wasn't going to start a 40K army right away anyway. I just bought the 10th edition rule book. If I am reasonably sure 40K isn't going to be destroyed by Woke Cancel Pigs, then I will start collecting Imperial Guard, and probably go Cadian theme unless I come up with something better.
If I think 40K is sliding down a slippery slope, I won't start collecting.
