Supposedly, in 1946, my grandfather asked a waitress at a local restaurant to marry him. She said no. He asked "how about a date then". She said no. Apparently he asked her out once a week for a month or two before she relented. They got married in 1947 and three later they had my mother creating the link of life that would eventually create me.
I only heard the account from my mother. The story could easily be an exaggeration as my grandmother was wont to do.
I often wish I could be more like my grandfather in many ways, but I don't believe his style of courtship today. If I kept hitting on a waitress at my favorite restaurant, I doubt I'd be arrested, but I'd probably be asked by the manager not to come back.
My grandfather could not cook and his small town did not have a lot of restaurants. If he was banned from the restaurant for harassing the waitress, he would have gone hungry.
I suppose since I can cook for myself, I have a level of security that he did not. Still not going to try it.
