AoS Let's talk about nerfs and buffs from 3.0

So the Gravetide is the new Purple Sun, Purple sun is much weaker, the Quicksilver Swords can still hit a single unit pretty hard and can't be negated, interesting.

Ravenak's and Pendulum got a lot worse, and Burning Head is a one-shot spell now?

Shackles is changing the game, and Cogs is just good for us. Both will probably good spells since we usually have 1-3 casters.

How are we feeling about skink priests? On first glance they look like they have been buffed along with all the other priests, however the command ability is kinda nerfed because all out attack and +1 to save just isn't as strong anymore.

One good thing about the priests command ability is that it goes off in the hero phase so you can issue another order during shooting/combat phase.

While I can easily justify running one I don't think you can run two like before.

well for starters taking heal on a priest is wonderful if you got behemoths

The priest's command ability is still stronger than "all out attack" as it triggers in the command phase and last through different phases after that. Not sure if in 3.0 you kan give the same unit other commands in subsequent fases, I have to check the wording on that.

Edit: I see that you can in theory stack commands as long as they trigger in different phases.

I'm pretty sure priests will shine.
Example. A unit of 6 kroxigors was a really solid hitter in the thunderquake, delivering up to 8 attacks each - 48 attacks.
Now, losing those battallion bonuses, they will deliver "only" 36 attacks. Stack a priest with them for +1 to hit, give the priest the prayer to inflict MWs on 6s to hit, and suddenly your kroxigors on average will inflict 6 MWs while hitting.

With new rules, we only need to learn the different ways to stack effects.

Don't forget, that now all spells are controlled and you move them twice per round. While Sun is worse against large blobs of multi-wound models and cannot deal as much damage with a lucky 6, its damage is way more consistent. It can easily one-shot a 5 wounds support hero without even a chance of being dispelled. Going wild may be a problem though.

Quicksilver is now the most expensive spell. And I don't think that no negation is worth it. You still need to high-roll to deal any actual damage. If it was like 40 points less expensive, I'd say, it is good. But you may spend 90 pts and easily do nothing.

Any list with blob of 30 skinks and/or skink monsters can start with 2 priests. They are godly in terms of how many different things they bring up to army.

First of all, save stacking is not gone anywhere. It is only worse against no rend attacks. If you stack 2 +1 save modifiers, you gain +1 save and reduce incoming rend by 1. Consider now that most of the rend which we meet in the game is 1. Quite a few strong units have rend 2 and rend 3 is a rarity.

So the +1 save is still strong no matter where it comes from. But, actually, the strong part of skinks ability is run+charge. Since we lost thunderquake battalion. it is even more important now.

Also priest gives additional healing, 6+ ward and may curse an enemy which comes too close. They also can unbind endless spells. Not as important for us, but still a nice thing to have. Finally, priests are squishy, so you want to have some redundancy.

+1 to-hit from priest has a special feature - it lasts until next hero phase. This means, that in shooting/combat you can stack different CAs on buffed units. Like, give +1 to-hit on bastiladon from priests and then double-tap it in the shooting phase. And you also can have multiple units under +1 to-hit in the same shooting phase, which is nice.

I think having 2-3 priests is more than justified in any skink list.

So i've just been raeding the rules, unless i've misunderstood it, as long as the battlepack (which is the mission your looking to play?) allows it we can still use our book specific battalions as these would count as warscroll battalions?

'Battalions are formations of specific units that give you access to additional abilities. There are two types of battalion: warscroll battalions
(When we republish a warscroll battalion, the new version takes precedence over versions with an earlier publication date or no publication date)
and core battalions. The battlepack you are using will say whether you can use battalions and which types of battalion you can use. Battalions are picked after you have picked the units for your army.'

so perhaps they will be free for us going foreward? would be pretty nice.

Maybe. But isn't everybody saying that in match play only the core battalions will be usable? I know some people use the points values in non-matched play, though.

I guess we will have to wait and see what the battlepack options are. Not having 'official' points and the GHB is leaving some guess work and interpretations.

it's bassed on battle packs and both of the ones we have seen so far do not allow them

Do you have a link or a direction to look to see these? I've been away from home for a few days so havent been able to watch / listen to any AV rescources that have come out.

Unless i'm blind or the version i downloaded from Community is missing extra pages i cant see any battle plans / packs in there? it explains what they are and that each one will explain if you can take Warscroll battalions or core battalions and how many if any but no actual battlepacks?

No, you're not blind. I believe this on par with the 2.0 release, though. Just the basic rules are released for free (and are included in many other publications that aren't free), while battle plans, or "battle packs" now, are in the Core Rulebook, the General's Handbook, and more specialized ones are in campaign books and Battletomes. At least that's my recollection.

So we will have to wait for the big book / the GHB for official plans/packs?

That's what my thought was.

there ya go
