George Lucas is a very skilled storyteller and a very skilled engineer of special effects.
He's not good at crafting romantic subplots. That's why the Anakin/Padme romance was so meme-ably awkward. GL's own love life has been awkward.
The Han-Leia romantic subplot was good but not because of anything George Lucas wrote or directed. The two hooked up in real life, so they had genuine chemistry. Also, I believe the famous "I know" response was an ad lib.
That said, I shouldn't throw stones from glass houses. I am not capable of writing better romantic stories. That's probably why I like to write about androgynous lizardmen who spawn asexually from magic pools.
