Blog NIGHTBRINGER's Painting Blog - 1000 point (not so) year end Chaos Dwarfs challenge (78.2%)

I never thought of it that way, but you might very well be right. I'm trying to think of who contends with them in terms of grimdark. Dark Elves... maybe?

DE are dark, indeed, but in the end we can see half naked women, while dwarfs are already grumpy and gloomy, so they win. Plus, the babilon look helps a lot in this regard.

Are we looking at this in terms of aesthetics, lore or a combination of both?

Like the Old Chaos Dwarfs (4th edition?) With their usualy bright colors :p

@Killer Angel ... the only one that believed... and time has proven you wise! :)

And with that my hiatus is officially done. One entire month without making a single post (January 13 - February 13).

Plus this is good progress for my goal of having 1000 points painted for my Chaos Dwarfs army!!

Love the gnoblars!

I'd say both are valid. As for lore, DE and CD are both very dark, but looking at the aesthetics chaos dwarfs are darker. Imo.
At least, if we don't look at their first appearance, as @Imrahil said. :p
Intriguing.

I agree with you that aesthetically the Chaos Dwarfs are more grimdark. At the end of the day, no matter how evil you make an elf, it's still only an elf!! :p Also the beards, armour, fire, magma and daemonic influence gives them the edge.

If we consider the lore angle, I think a case can be made for the Dark Elves. The Chaos Dwarfs view other races as beneath them and expendable. As such, they take prisoners/slaves to perform the worst of the labor in pursuit of building their empire/civilization. While they are undoubtedly cruel, I don't think they go as far as the Dark Elves who take great pleasure in torturing their victims for the sheer enjoyment of it. The Dark Elves also have all their strange blood rituals. Lastly, the Chaos Dwarfs are more honorable (among their own kind!) than the treacherous Dark Elves.

As for the other evil races, Orcs/Goblins and Skaven are too silly. Beastmen are too stupid. Daemon models look a bit too cartoony. That leaves us with the WoC and Vampire Counts as the only other viable contenders (although I feel that the Chaos Dwarfs and Dark Elves have them beat).

I agree that, going only by lore, DE are pretty wicked.
Looking again at lore, VC and WoC certainly are good contenders. When you insert also the visual pov, i think the grimdark podium is formed by (in uncertain order) CD, VC and WoC, with DE in fourth position.

that said, grimdark is not mere evil. it's unforgiving and brutal... and so even skaven could have a say.

My K'daai Fireborn needed some square bases. I have a huge collection of spare bases, but very few 40x40mm. A bit of acrylic cutting later...

Holes drilled on the bottom to house some rare earth magnets in the future (I'm all out at the moment) and a bit of surface scoring on top to help improve glue adhesion.

That is nice.
You do this all yourself?

What does your workbench/workstation look like?

Grrr, Imrahil
Thanks!

Yup, I cut them on my scroll saw. I'll have to take a picture of my workshop, but it is kind of messy at the moment!

This is a picture of the Scroll Saw I use to cut the bases as well as all my assorted wood workings. That isn't my current workshop though.

I think Dark Elves would tie on grimdark as at least the Chaos Dwarves are not constantly betraying each other, backstabbing, murdering, etc. They at least have a group thing going. The Dark Elves are a tenuous alliance within themselves at best.

A bit of work on my Fireborn bases...

Continuing with the bases. The cork has received 3 coats of Varathane varnish and the rest of the base has been covered in a glue + saw dust paste. Now I have to let the glue dry, at which point the bases are ready for the Fireborn.

The bases look great. Great idea to use cork for that stone.

Did I miss you posting pictures of the fireborn models? Or is that still to come?

Thank you!

Still to come. They have been washed, cleaned of mold lines/flash and almost fully assembled (just have to choose which combination of hands/weapons to go with). Then comes gap-filling... god do I hate gap filling!

Where did you get the minis from for them?
They're from Forge World. I got them just before the range was discontinued.

These are the models (this is the stock picture from Forge World):

They're pretty cool models. Not my favourite from the range, but quite nice with the right paint job (I am a little be scared and hesitant to paint them though).

Nice looking models. You lucky bastard.
With the fire recipe you did on the hobgoblin base these will look fantastic.
