What are you doing today hobbywise?

Progress on the Japs is ongoing. All 30 bodies from the infantry kit are mounted on bases, with 16 out of 30 having their weapons (2 LMGs, 2 light mortars, 3 SMGs, and 9 rifles). 2 SMGs (including an officer with a sword sidearm) and 4 loaders (2 LMG, 2 light mortar) are the only specially designated models left to build - the rest will be rifles.

In other news, after sorting through all the kits in my pile of shame, I've got a stack of stuff that I'm planning on selling at up to 1/3 of retail price depending on condition:
  • 3 Primaris Repulsor kits (still wrapped in plastic)
  • 2 Taurox Primes from SC! Tempestus Scions kits (1 untouched on sprue, 1 with partially pre-built turret [autocannons, twin gatling cannon, storm bolter])
  • 30 Tempestus Scions from SC! Tempestus Scions kits (missing backpacks, bases, most special weapons... would honestly recommend more for conversion work or building tempestor primes)
  • 3 Commissars from SC! Tempestus Scions and SC! Astra Militarum kits (untouched on sprue)
  • 1 Primaris Redemptor Dreadnought kit (still wrapped in plastic)
  • 1 Space Marine Company Command kit (missing Company Ancient banner pole and bases)
  • 1 Space Marine Centurion kit (weapons and plating only)
  • 1 Skaven Plague Monks kit (untouched on sprue)
While sorting, I also dusted off a Corvus Blackstar from over a year ago that I intended on using as a conversion base for a Vendetta gunship (at least, once all the Inquisitorial adornments were removed or covered.)

Worked some more on my Perry Foot Knights. I have all but three of them finished, although I have a couple that need their arms adjusted to fit properly.

Started teaching my wife how to play Warhammer 8th Edition (!!!!! :D :D :) !!!!!) so we'll see how this goes...!!!!

I'm pretty stoked about it. She's about as sharp as you can get (IQ 145 or something crazy) and is a big book reader who has recently started reading fantasy books (mainly Brandon Sanderson which I was also pretty please about as a Stormlight Archive reader).

Fingers crossed!!!!

Well, I've finally sorted out how I was going to blot out the Inquisitorial sigils on the Corvus Blackstar: really thin plasticard, and a lot of Tamiya-brand plastic cement.

Planning ahead for the paint scheme, I'm going to be looking at a semi-naval camouflage with white or sky grey underbelly, not unlike the late-WW2 RAF Day Fighter scheme.

Apart from that, I'm still in the process of whittling down the pile of shame:
  • The tauric demigryph knight is finally on his base and now sharing a shelf with a bloodwrack medusa and an ogor tyrant.
  • Parts left over from multiple Horus Heresy space marine tactical squad kits were cut from their sprues, assembled where required (heavy bolters, missile launchers, and 30+ Mk IV torsos), and stored in a parts bin less than a quarter the size of the original box. I probably have enough plasma guns to equip a 10-man tactical support squad in Horus Heresy now (you know, to go along with the flamer squad and melta squad I've already built for my Salamanders).
  • The Realmshaper Engine is finally built (sort of; the supports holding up the dias at the top are not glued to the rest of the pyramid).
I also managed to unearth some 27 old Dark Eldar models - 1 metal archon with splinter pistol and staff, 10 warriors with splinter rifles, 6 warriors with splinter cannons, 6 warriors with splinter pistols and blades (wyches?), and 3 spare bodies lacking arms. These models may be a bit dated for starting a Drukkari army for 40k, especially since I can only field enough to meet the minimum requirements of a patrol detachment, but it's given me ideas as to a possible non-Imperial army further down the line.

I ran down to my FLGS and spent some Christmas money to buy Direchasm, the Ironjawz Warcry box, and a couple other things. I also based the Perry knights I've been working on. I'm hoping to have them done in the next day or so, but we'll see. Finally, I built two test models from the Oathmark humans box I got for Christmas, one spearman and one hooded archer.

Oh, right! And PAINT! I bought paint!

I need to get a specific paint when this lockdown is lifted in Ontario.

One thing about this hobby is that most practitioners always need a specific pot of paint for a specific reason! ;)

I personally need more square and rectangular bases (20mms, 25mms, Cavalry and Monstrous Infantry bases). There’s a great shop not that far from where I live that still has a good stock, just hope they still have some after this lockdown :nailbiting:

I took a quick break from the foot knights to build five Ardboys to start my Orruk Warclans project for the year.

I would offer you some from the pile I have leftover from my WFB days, but I suspect I may need them in the near-ish future.

But in the meantime, I did my Canoness conversion: https://www.lustria-online.com/threads/tkyapyks-modeling-attempts-scratchbashers-beware.22996/page-3 (scroll down to the last entry)

I spent most of the previous night math-hammering the viability of clubs vs spears on saurus warriors and came to this verdict:
Taking honeycombing into consideration, the second rank of saurus typically starts between 23mm and 32mm from the combat front - short enough that said second rank can participate in attacks within 1" if properly positioned. However, a third rank would typically start between 52mm and 62mm in kind, meaning that you'd be really hard-pressed to get that third rank of saurus participating on any given combat front within 2" (granted, you'd also have to be a real stickler for measurement on this matter since the smaller measurement is barely more than 1/32" above 2").

By contrast, units on the smaller bases have little issue in piling in two ranks for 1" attacks with their second rank starting between 18mm and 25mm under the same principle, with 2" attacks further added by a third rank starting between 41mm and 48mm. You'd literally have to be actively sabotaging yourself in order to fail getting that kind of efficiency on a combat front.

This, by the way, is a big part of the reason why there's the perception that spears are better on larger units in general. It just simply does not translate well from 25mm bases to 32mm bases.

At least, not without bumping up the attack range to 3" like it is with the Vanari Auralan Wardens.

In essence, celestite spears under the current rule set will almost always be outshone by celestite clubs where a saurus unit engages another unit directly, no matter the unit size, and especially after factoring in the rending characteristic. Where spears really shine however is in the ability for the front rank to attack a separate unit behind the first rank or two of the opposing unit it's already engaged with, or to attack a unit from behind an intervening chaff unit of your own - two very situational circumstances that require set-up by either yourself or your opponent.

It's a bit of a damper having come to this conclusion, not least of all after labouring to get 90 saurus warriors built with spears recently, but I'm not about to replace them with clubs just because of a little postmortem math.

EDIT:
Another thing to consider is that the base size of the opposing unit will have an impact on your combat frontage. While 25mm bases offer an easier time getting that second rank in combat (though not by much - 1mm closer at most), 40mm bases present a bigger challenge than would be usual for saurus units to get even half of the second rank within 1". Once the opposing unit's base size reaches 50mm and larger, it actually becomes a near-impossibility for saurus and other 32mm-based models to get 1" attacks from the second rank. Obviously, spears would be more useful in this situation than clubs, thus the spear resumes being an anti-large weapon purely as a function of base size.
Other than that:
  • I've gotten around to priming the Vendetta with [Tamiya] Medium Sea Grey underneath and [Tamiya] Ocean Grey on top to get started with the modified RAF Day Fighter camo scheme. Now I'm waiting for a good day outside to do the rest by airbrush.
  • The Penumbral Engine from the Forbidden Power expansion set is finally built. I'm still working on the endless spells provided in the same kit.
  • Perusing through a Primaris Gladiator kit to see how I could effectively convert it into a grav equivalent of a Taurox Prime with autocannons and missile launchers. I'm already seeing the need to replace the twin las-talons with autocannons, which will be the easiest conversion. The missile launchers on the other hand may require some plasticard work since I'm interested in building the turret with a set-up approximating a manned version of the BMPT Terminator weapon system, as well as figuring out what I want to do with the mini sponsons in the vanilla kit - I'm thinking decorative smoke launchers, personally, even though the Taurox doesn't have access to them for some reason.
  • With all the sprues left over from building models and whatnot, I started building the scaffolding for what I hope to end up turning into an AoE-esque watchtower terrain piece for my Lizardmen. I can kind of blame finding Miniature Hobbyist for this one.

A little vanity project I conceived over a year ago, now finally entering the last stages of assembly.

The railgun was from a broadside battlesuit kit that I also cannibalized for the arm on the Imperial war-bot, which itself was a cannibalized AT reaver titan torso with a spare AT warlord titan head.

Overall, I'm having too much fun free-posing walkers for the tabletop, if the Primaris Redemptor Dreadnought I did nearly a year ago was any indication. Sotek help me if I start collecting Gundams...

EDIT: Here are some better photos, now that the plastic cement has finally cured.
