Hey all,

I havent played in a while since covid and now this sunday I am planning a game. I was wondering wether the RSE is worth using. It being set up before sides are taken makes it a gable to place on one side and in the middle it seems less usefull. How have you been using the RSE (if at all)

Cheers

*opens can of worms*

lol jk… its pretty split right now among the forums as to the value of the RSE. some people love it others feel its basically useless. the new terrain placement rules are definitely going to factor into this valuation as there have been major changes to how its done ( and even that is contentious with players saying they will ignore the new rule)

I haven't yet had the chance to play with it under the new rules as my GHB isn't in yet (im American and our stores are subject to different rules based on which state they are in... its a lovely time lol)

How exactly has the set-up of the Realmshape engine changed?

More than 6" away from table edge, more than 6" from objectives and now more than 3" from other terrain. Seeing as the Realmshaper is 6x6" this will make it impossible to place it within our deploymentzone on some battleplans if the terrain is set up in a specific way.

For me most of the value from the Realmshaper came from being able to deploy a unit (Slann) straight into it before the game began. That way he was -2 to be hit and 3+ save. Better Part of Valor, Scorched Earth etc. will have very limited space for it to be put down.

You mean, you'll be able to do so in 50% of your games right? The other 50% your opponent will get to have/use it.

Yep. No other way around it. Typically throw it on whatever side has the worst terrain.

What in the rules in the GHB says the realmshaper engine is setup after the other terrain? I would think the mention of other restrictions would include the restriction on the war scroll that it has to be setup before other terrian.

In the box "Battlefields at Events" on page 74.

We dont play with the player A and player B stuff.

Thanks for the responses, the 50% risk of giving the opponent an advantage seems to big for me atm. if you place it in the middle putting a wizard in it is also a risk since enemies can just choose to attack the wizard right? sucks that they didnt do anything to it. Looking at the bonereapers terrain that just looks so much better..

I highly doubt the majority of your opponents know how to take advantage of the Realmshaper if it is placed within their deploymentzone. I will be honest though, there have been quite a lot of games where I went "meeeh I cant be bothered taking this to the club tonight, just gonna leave it at home".

I don't take it because it's useless. Even if you get it on your side of the board you have to put a wizard in it and then you get the chance to shoot at a unit near some terrain for d3 mortals. It's not even guaranteed to go off. That's a lot of things that have to go right just to be able to shoot the stupid thing. And the extra d3 mortals It brings in our army is kinda win more. Not worth it.

I run a list with Kroak + Slann. It is pretty funny to put a Slann inside and throw out Geminids. Shooting enemies that target the Slann will be -3 to be hit. The survivability from the Realmshaper is pretty reasonable, but the 50/50 is a bit bizare. I still believe it is their way of "balancing" the thing.
