Blog ChapterAquila92's Grav-Russ Executioner and other Projects

Got around to priming more models for painting.

Gotta have fun with model positioning.

Still keeping with the high tech theme, kept up in part by an interest in fielding a Kasrkin-like force since 3rd Edition, all of my "normal" infantry for my army are tempestus scions. Not one in favour of the baroque "platemail" look of the default plastic kit's carapace armour, I opted to kitbash Cadian torsos, Tempestus arms, weapons and backpacks, and third party legs and heads from Anvil Industry (specifically, Unity Council Marine heads and Armoured Legs).

IMG_20190122_002202.jpg

This will also be my standard loadout for the squad: 2 plasma guns, 1 meltagun, 1 hotshot volleygun, 1 voxcaster, and a Sergeant wielding a plasma pistol and power sword. As befits the mechanized nature of my army, they'll eventually have a Taurox Prime to ride in.
Whilst I anxiously wait for the release of the Titandeath expansion to Adeptus Titanicus, along with several armament options to become available, I figured I'd at least start painting the models I currently have.

IMG_20190122_004252.jpg

Granted, Legio Xestobiax, the legio I'm painting these as being part of, considers the smaller Warhound-Class titans to be a waste of resources, and instead prefers the larger Reaver- and Warlord-Class titans. Between maintaining a handful of Warhounds and being a small legio in general (50-100 titans at most) however, I'd be willing to argue that these are among the legio's only Warhounds.

Performing a few cross-posts from another thread:
In a painting binge last night, I powered through a number of endless spells, finished painting the base of a vindicare assassin, applied a green base coat to my five Salamanders firedrakes, and touched up the redemptor dreadnought's legs before finishing their assembly.

ADDENDUM: The dreadnought is now mostly assembled. I still need to work on the weapons and frontal glacis.

img_20190123_120055-jpg.50610
Worked on three Deimos-pattern rhinos for my Salamanders.

img_20190125_220030-jpg.50672

So far, I've got the hulls built, and will be adding the tracks once I'm done painting. As for the top hatches, I will be equipping them such that each rhino will have a multi-melta for 30k and a second storm bolter for 40k.
Another day, another order. I've planned out how I'll be building an 8-man squad of Salamanders veterans with power mauls: use Salamanders Legion Pyroclast models as the base, and supplement with vanilla Mk III parts (specifically, right arms, backpacks, and bolters) and greatmaces from the Stormcast Sequitors kit I've been cannibalizing for parts. Since a fair amount of the Salamanders models I'm building for 30k are going to be co-opted for use in 40k as well, I think I've also found an additional use for my 10-man seeker squad with combi-meltas as sternguard vets.
Built a helmetless Vulkan He'stan, with the head supplied from what's left of a previous box of space marines.

I also took some time building dreadfire close combat weapons for a Bray'arth Ashmantle/venerable dreadnought model.

With the exception of the backpacks, the rest of the parts I needed for the power maul-equipped veteran squad arrived in the mail today, along with a Mk IIB land raider, pintle mounts for the rhinos, and some skin wolves models I thought looked gorgeous.

So far, 4 of the 8 veterans built are now merely in need of the mace heads and backpacks, whereas a fifth needs a bolt pistol as well. The remaining veterans still need to be assembled up to the same degree.

Because Salamanders-specific shoulder pads were also included in the shipment, my sternguards/seekers are now ready for their first coat of paint.
Got started working on a Salamanders Chaplain model to represent Xiaphas Jurr for 30k, using a pristine Chaplain Xavier as the base for the conversion (Xiaphas Jurr is equipped with a power maul, iron halo, and storm shield).
Still plugging away at building Xiaphas Jurr for Horus Heresy, with particular focus on his forearms.

A while back, I had removed the forearms off of the base Chaplain Xavier model so as to get rid of the "leather glove" gauntlets the original model had in favour of something more befitting a wearer of artificer armour, specifically the forearms from Mk III parts. His right arm, originally wielding Xavier's hammer, is now successfully holding Jurr's master-crafted power maul, itself made out of clipped parts of a Stormcast greatmace. His left arm, which will be his storm shield arm, is unfortunately not cooperating even with the pinning I've had to do, as the superglue I've been using elsewhere on the model has decided to cure extra slowly there.

Also, unless I can somehow find an independent supplier of drakescale storm shields from the firedrakes kit, I'll probably be using a saurus shield to represent that piece of wargear considering how may I have access to thanks to my Seraphon army.

Beyond that, my aim for this week is to get two more reaver titans built for Adeptus Titanicus. As a bit of a diversion, I had also gotten started on a showpiece model featuring a tau ghostkeel suit wielding a broadside's twin-linked railgun.

Nice!

Also loving the shiny new avatar :pompus:

Thanks!

Touched up the most unsightly gaps on the land raider for my Salamanders army before going to town with the spray paint, first with a full coat of black primer and then a "dusted" layer of Caliban Green from a 45-degree angle.

I still have to assemble the cupola with a pintle-mounted multi-melta, but for transportation purposes I'll be keeping it separate from the rest of the model.

I finished mounting all of the armour plating on my two warlord titans for AT, and not a moment to spare on the black primer before dusting with Leadbelcher.

img_20190212_211056-jpg.51407

Both models took part in a couple of games over the past weekend in their unarmoured state, to which one of my fellow AT players jokingly referred to them as being from Legio Anorexio due to how skinny they looked. Also seen was another warlord by someone who's just gotten started with their own models; he intended to pose the model in a straight-legged standing position, but because he propped the model against an object that moved overnight and didn't give much forethought into building the legs from the feet up instead of from the hips down, the model now looks like it's giving its best Rose impression on the bow of the Titanic.

So here's what I have so far of a Taurus Venator I've been converting from an Achilles Ridgerunner.

IMG_20190321_145229.jpg IMG_20190321_145244.jpg IMG_20190321_145257.jpg

I still have some plasticard work to do on the model before I'm finished building it, along with properly assembling the twin lascannon.

Back to my Salamanders army, I took to building a land raider proteus with a hull-mounted twin-linked lascannon. For 30k, this will be the transport of choice for my 10-man seeker squad.

IMG_20190324_002218.jpg

As seen in the photo, the track pieces fit poorly as is from the kit, so at some point I will be doing some plasticard work to make a filler track segment. As for the hull-mounted lascannons, they're from a spare predator turret option I had lying around (this particular kit comes with heavy bolters only).

Another round of Salamanders models, this time focusing on a unit of sternguard vets with combi-flamers and two heavy flamers, on top of finishing off the flamestorm cannon sponsons for the land raider redeemer.

I'm feeling a little creative with the vets so that the heavy flamers don't feel out of place, as I'm using the flame projectors from a pyroclast kit that I've already converted to be my vanguard vets.

Crunch time on the Salamanders army. As I still needed a standard-bearer in my Horus Heresy army, I decided to build one using parts from the Space Marine Command Squad, some left-over bits from when I was building Bray'arth Ashmantle, and a couple of upgrade sprues from Forge World.

My Salamanders infantry for Horus Heresy, barring my chaplains, are now officially "tabletop-ready".

I even had a blast so far painting up the Bray'arth Ashmantle torso I'm using for a mortis dreadnought.

As an experiment in using the new contrast paints as a candy coat, I finally got started with painting more of my Adeptus Titanicus models in Xestobiax' colours.

I used Apothecary White and Shyish Purple for this one. I still have to touch up the trim.

As some of you are aware, I've recently taken to collecting Skaven as my Chaos army of choice, with an emphasis on it being themed around Eshin and Skryre. To date, that collection includes the following units that are built for the most part:
  • 1 Verminlord Deceiver
  • 1 Grey Seer
  • 2 Clawlords
  • 2 Deathmasters
  • 1 Arch-Warlock
  • 1 Warlock-Bombardier
  • Spiteclaw's Swarm
  • 120 Clanrats with rusty spears
  • 20 Stormvermin
  • 3 Warplock Jezzails
  • 6 Stormfiends
  • 3 Gnawholes
  • Warp Lightning Vortex
  • Bell of Doom
  • Vermintide
Outside of my Imperial Guard collection, this is by far the one army I own in which I have done kitbash conversions for. With that said, unlike the Guard, the kitbashing was the result of me not liking the sculpts in the available miniature line for some of the units I want to field. A prime example of this are my warplock jezzails, as shown over on the other thread, having been made using stormvermin and skitarii ranger parts and then given ghillie suits made out of cheesecloth soaked in a PVA/water mix.

Barring future resculpts of night and gutter runners, I'm also more than likely to be doing similar conversions for those, provided that I find enough skavenslave sling upgrade packs for the former and something else suitable for the latter. Apart from that, I'm tempted to go with 3rd party models of Skryre Acolytes that look suitably Eshin-themed, seeing as I'm not willing to pay over $100 for a 60pt unit of 5 pewter figurines.

Playing with the Eshin theme further, I've more or less decided that the clan my collection is part of, while nominally associated with Eshin, acquired some technical expertise from a Skryre clan via hostile takeover, and have since grown fond of using infernal war machines to cause as much mayhem as possible in one place to more easily distract their opponents away from sneakier elements elsewhere.

As such, I'll most likely end up having to build at least one DOOMWHEEL for a distraction carnifex or two.

Looks like the next three months will have me restricted hobby-wise to list-building, courtesy of the Royal Canadian Navy. In any case, it gives me a lot of time to plan out some army compositions I want to try building up to at some point when I get back home.

First on the list is a planned Night Lords collection which, like my Salamanders, will be as cross-compatibile as possible between Horus Heresy and 40k. Unlike my Salamanders, it's a jump pack army.
