AoS Big Dinos and you

I've found a few proxies that I'd dig. But honestly I don't mind getting the forge world guy. Like... I tend to go through phases... No spending on Warhammer for like a month or two while I'm painting, then later I let the dam break and fill up my queue again. So, if I get less models next time it doesn't matter. Especially if one of them is the biggest baddest monster (arguably) in the game.

But yeah, I'm mostly concerned with points. Like... It takes up almost half a 1k list right? What else would you use along side it to make a decent list?

It's badass... But I dunno if Dread Saruon and slaan with a few skinks will cut the mustard. Like, yeah I can summon reinforcements...

Also, can this thing fit into a meeting engagement?

Like, I'm fascinated, but also at work so.... Will have to get home to to proper list building.

For 2k, I suppose I'd consider running it as a monster hunter alongside a Slann, Skink cloud, TQ Starhost with a Trog, 2x Stegabow, and hella Kroxigor (at least 6)..? Then I guess I'd do my best to fill out the army with anti-horde stuff... idk.

For what it's worth, exchanging the Warden for a Sunblood opens up exchanging the Terradons for 3 Rippers, 2 more Skink units, etc., and the Sunblood makes the Guard much more offensive. That might be a better way to go.

Fo real tho, mad on point. I'm going to play with ways to make it work. I like that a lot, but I lament the lack of a slaan... So, idk. It's hard to fit both. But I'm kinda stoked about this. May test this with a big Tyranid beasty in its place to see if I want to buy it.

Yeah, Dread Saurian vs Slann is definitely a difficult trade. I modified the list above after you'd 'liked' it, so maybe have a look over. It's pretty aggressive (at the expense of running a Wizard), but I bet it could work.

If Endless Spells are a worry, Light of Dracothion may be a better artefact.

Me, I play reckless. :rolleyes::D I just go all-in. Sunblood + Ghyrstrike + Disciplined Fury is just... just... (heavy breathing) whew!

Noteworthy: Combining Ghyrstrike with Disciplined Fury makes a doubly-beneficial tandem.

By substantially empowering the Sunblood (with constant, passive buffs), they free up this army's command points. The Sunblood is no longer self-reliant on its Warscroll's Command Ability to be a beast in combat.

That Command Ability (and its vanilla counterparts) will be critical on targets besides the Sunblood/SG. Those command points would confer massive benefits to the Dread Saurian, second-round Rippers, slow units *needing* a successful charge, etc..

For this list, that flexibility is huge!!

You might want to swap out the priest for a Starpriest for the extra damage on the jaws with serpent staff and you can make him the general to allow him to use celestial rights as well. Having the unbind is also useful

Yeah, especially in a Drachotion's tail, you could have 2 Bastiladons and 2 Steggies, and have a double charge with 2 BastilArk since turn 1...

Yeah this is some silly stuff right here. My BattleScribe can't take all this madness. I need more big Dinos. Looking like a stegadon will be my next one... With a dread saurian right behind.

When fielding a DS, you need to build a part of your army around it. Even if I usually advice against it, you should consider to give your Slann Vast Intellect. Buff the DS with Curse of Fate, and use a Starpriest for the Serpent's staff and Starlight.
At that point, LoSaT the beast, activate the Cogs and enjoy your charge at 5+, threatening double damage with the jaws with a 5+
 
I will be honest here: the more and more play I have had the less and less favorably I look at huge monsters. Carnosaurs, Stegadons, Bastiladons, and Troglodons are all reasonably priced, although bastiladons are a bit more expensive. In general each big monster has its uses as follows. Carnosaurs are formidable monster hunters and decent infantry killers, scar vets should use a sword of judgment for max damage, while oldbloods should use a doppelgänger cloak. Overall I love Carnosaurs as they are flexible, powerful, and can be used in many armies. Engines of the Gods, while nerfed are still potent. Regular stegadons are effective at dealing with large blocks of infantry especially with their stomps, which are formidable. However they are less effective and require some prep work to properly function. Bastiladons, while powerful are also very costly so you need some planning to maximize their value, however they offer a wide variety of useful damage output and are very hard to kill. Then there are Troglodons, which probably should not have army points spent on them. Instead summon them in as they are so cheap, and for their cost they are pretty effective.

As for dread saurian, it’s complex. When used to the maximum it is lethal and nearly unstoppable. However you need to build your whole army around them, which means you will often be very inflexible in combat. Furthermore if they die then you lose a huge part of the army. It’s very similar to other huge models like Star drakes and Zombie Dragons. They are both deadly models but can be brought down with ease by infantry of the same cost or cheaper.
 
Hey all, I spent some time analyzing the Thunderquake Starhost in a shooting-heavy list. I featured the battalion in such a list and, whew, it's pretty good.

The list has a bunch of stuff, but the battalion fields runs 3 Stegadons w/ Skystreak Bows (2 in the battalion), Salamanders/Handlers, and a Troglodon. With shooting in mind, all of them make optimal targets for the Creator's Will (Savage) and the Stegadon's Skink Alpha ability to great effect.

I've been gone a long time, so maybe empowering our shooting phase with The Creator's Will (Savage) is already common knowledge/a common practice. Despite a lot of Googling, I wasn't able to find any literature indicating such. That made running this math a pretty exciting thing!

Yeah, IIRC there's not a tactical thread about it, but it's well known.
One of the most basic combo is double bastiladons, buffed by astrolith bearer.
4d6 laser, rerolling to hit, to wound and saves (a thing much useful for bastiladons, it makes them almost immortal)

There, I've got a BatRep with it. :)

Of course, this is not exactly a cheap option, so alternative builds are a thing.

The Bastiladons are more expensive (2 Bastiladons are priced only a bit cheaper than 3 Stegadons).

The Bastiladons are superior at the shooting-specific role in terms of wounds-generated. It's worth noting, however, that the gap is substantially smaller if we're assuming that the only commonality in this comparison is The Creator's Will.

On the flipside, the Stegadon brings a *ton* of versatility.

If we're looking at these two options as a whole (and without considering support), the Stegadon exceeds the Bastiladon's overall wounding capability in this set up (due to the Stegadon's prowess in melee).

I suppose my read is this:

Bastiladon = specialized shooty/tanky w/ specific uses and good for specific lists,

Stegadon = very, very well-rounded toolkit that fits just about anywhere in just about any army (supposing the army is bringing a TQStarhost in the first place).

Which makes me wonder why the stagadon is webstore only? Like... By the above analysis the stegadon should be the one stocked in stores.

Like, it looks like a stegadon is a good pick for virtually any list, so long as you have the points left. Whereas, the bastillidon seems to be more a thing that you build your list around.

I’d imagine it’s GW web only so they can keep a hold on the price, seems like GW have started doing that more meaning non-GW FLGS aren’t selling at 20-25% cheaper.

Actually, I have seen the stuff go for somewhat cheaper on sites like amazon. While it is not significantly cheaper it still is a few bucks off the rather ridiculous prices GW sets.
