For me it all depends on one thing.
As most of you probably know, I’m one of the few people who doesn’t give a damn about the so-called nostalgia produced by the Original Trilogy. As a result I would be unphased if the decision was made to have the Falcon destroyed in IX. Indeed I would actually be quite pleased if they had the guts to do it, especially as it’s been confirmed that IX will be the conclusion to the Skywalker saga - this is the perfect time to finish off everything linked with the Original Trilogy so that a fresh, new story unaffected by the so-called nostalgia can be worked on.
I’m pretty sure that Lando will die in some way in IX, as they killed off Han in VII and Luke in VIII. If it is planned for the Falcon to be destroyed, I think it would be quite fitting for Lando to die with it as it’s shot down in flames, because it would mean that not only would he have been the first owner of the Falcon, he also would be the last. Perhaps he finds that the only way to defeat a First Order vessel like the Finaliser would involve sacrificing himself and the Falcon. I don’t know, but certainly it would be a faithful way to see the character off.
However, if they decide to kill off Lando another way and/or intend to keep the Falcon surviving right to the end, it would be better for it to end up with one of the others.
I would hardly be surprised if Kathleen ‘Darth’ Kennedy decided to make Rey the final owner, as she’s Disney’s golden girl, but let’s analyse the claims in an unbiased fashion:
Rey first became a co-owner of the Falcon in 33ABY, only a few years before Episode IX.
Chewie first came into co-ownership of the Falcon when Han won it off Lando in 10 BBY, 9 years after the end of the Clone Wars and 43 years before Rey did.
It’s obvious that Chewie’s claim takes precedence, regardless of what the feminist extremists who have taken over Lucasfilm say.
So to reiterate, I think that if the Falcon is to be destroyed, Lando should be the last owner so he can die with it, while if it is to survive, Chewie should be the next owner.
