Citadel Glazes are sadly going away as you may know. I use them extensively to paint my Bretonnians, so I decided to show you how you can make the exact same product VERY CHEAPLY. The video includes precise colour matching and dilution recipes.

The glazes might stay though, and only be renamed.
What I read about the topic isn't 100% clear.

Oh it's pretty clear. It's been confirmed. They are going away. Might come back in the future who knows it's happened before.
 
So the conclusion was-is their glazes were just carefully watered down ink? (...or ink blends in a couple of cases?)

Essentially yes, probably they are diluted in medium rather than water but yes, diluted inks.

I will admit that using Lahmian Medium instead of water to dilute the inks would probably give a much closer match chemically to the original product but that would defeat the purpose of the video because Lahmian Medium is stupidly expensive (great too, but expensive AF)

From my understanding of searching online Lahmian Medium is GW equivalent to a medium and it was released like 4-5 years ago.

I have always used Acrylic Medium in the past (from regular paint stores), anyone knows if there is a difference between these two products?

I.e. is GW's price point justified? I kind of have hard to believe their product is that much better than the regular old mediums.

And great work on this @Itepixcauh just watched the video and I am sure this will help players after they use up their current stock.

On a curiosity point, when looking for the right combination, did you just start with paint and kept diluting it slowly with water until you got the right consistency/match, or did you do some math first?

Lahmian medium is just the acrylic medium akin to the chemistry of their paints, it's just another medium and it SHOULDN'T be as expensive. I've tried to recreate it but it's just not the same for some reason, it has some weird chemistry in it, diluted matte medium is the closest it gets. But as it has no pigment it should be cheaper or at least available in larger formats. For this mixes you can add a couple of drops of glaze medium to each mix and it would work very well. I've even tried it using just glaze medium instead of water and the results are smooth as silk but defeats the purpose of the video as it would be more complicated and much more expensive.

For the dilution once I have the hue perfected I just added a drop of water per part of ink and tried, kept doing that until I got the desired intensity
 
Lahmian medium should basically be the same as any airbrush thinner.
 
Reaper makes something called flow improver. I wonder if that would work to replace the Lahaina medium.

Acrylic airbrush thinner is usually a mix of mostly water with a small percentage of flow improver and medium mixed in.

A flow improver is normally used to increase how well the paint flow when you paint while still binding the pigments. The best way to see this in use is by looking at a traditional painting, where the paint is significantly thicker than the miniature paint. Note. you don't use the flow improver directly with the paint, you dilute it with water according to the specifications listed, and then use the mixed solution with the paint.

Edit: I don't know the Reaper product, but since they are a miniature paint range, it is possible their flow improver is ready for use (pre-mixed), make certain to read their instructions before use.

Both of these should, in theory, work great for making ink/glazes out of thicker paint, of course, more expensive than using just water, but would not break the bank considering the amounts we are talking about. The difficult part is, of course, is working out the formula to get the paint match, i.e. same color match, etc.

I am certain that GW has just decided to sell their base medium (Lahmian Medium) that their paints are based on, at a high premium, just because people pay for it. Just like in the old days, when their paint was just relabeled/reboxed paint from another company at a higher price.
 
Games Workshop paints are made in the UK by a company called HMG paints, they are standard acrylic paints, Lahmian medium is Acrylic medium one of the best ones is W&N glazing medium.

When I did a workshop down at Warhammer world, I spoke to one of the lead designers and he told me he was taking over the paint marketing side of the business and they make more profit from the paints than anything else.

Yeah it's just a medium but still I've tried all the artist brands of glazing and matte mediums and they are still not the same for some reason. It really pisses me off.

Lahmian Medium is crazy overpriced but I still buy the damn thing
